450C Dozer 1974 Alternator Troubleshooting

Post by davidblackburn1 » Sat Oct 19, 2019 6:03 pm

Alternator appears to not be working. I have put a volt meter on the Battery with Dozer running and on the Alternator and it is only showing the Battery voltage. Also, If I disconnect the battery the dozer stops running.

It appears that the Voltage Regulator on the dash has been disconnected and that the alternator that is on the dozer has a Voltage Regulator on it.

(No Photos Yet) Here are the photos of the installed alternator (it has been on the machine long enough that it got the Yellow Paint Job that covered everything) (done quite a few years ago to it). Ok, I have requested a picture account and will hopefully be able to update this with some pictures.

Is this alternator worth working on or is there a recommended replacement (would like to price compare between one from JD or NAPA or ? brand).

This is a new to our family machine. We have only had it a week. We do have a JD parts account

Hi,

I would just replace it with a more modern one with integrated regulator and cutout. What is usually referred to as a one-wire alternator.

Delco $70 VS Motorolla $235. I went with a Delco.

Might you have a part number for the delco? How long ago did you put the Delco on your Dozer?

Note at PTO RPM the Alternator does show that is charging. However the amps only stay up for a short period of time before going back to zero.

Any parts store should be able to supply you with a Delco 10SI one wire alternator. See if they have one set up with a low turn on speed, those start charging at a lower engine rpm. The regular ones will start if you bring the rpms up, so low speed start isn't critical just handy. Also you may need to have them get a pulley the right width for your belt, in a small diameter.

You should check with Lavoy, he might be able to set you right up with one.

My 450 plain has a model # 7377N alt with a regulator mounted on the back side. You could google that # and see if it looks like yours and find a matching voltage regulator just for a cost comparison.

(However the amps only stay up for a short period of time before going back to zero.) This could be normal operation if the voltage stays 13 to 14 volt. With good full charged battery the alternator would only put the electric used to run starter before tapering down. The shaft to mount the pulley could be 1/2 inch on the Motorola and the Delco could be 5/8. The large diameter pulley on the Motorola might be hard to find with 5/8 IN OD.

If all the tests in the manuals are done then if it needs regulator I have used old ford regulator from 70s ford pickup on firewall for cost effective fix. When replacing I have used 110-629 that has regulator but 1 inch spool mount at base and 118-2 adapter kit. Belt and pulley can be used with side covers.
