Wow, what a great pre-oiler! All it takes is a little ingenuity and presto.. I am pretty confident the assembly lube and the cranking will do the job. I have used the melling product before. Same with an engine builder that has done two engines for me. I am actually hoping to start the crawler in about three days. I just need to paint 3 parts today. Yesterday the entire day was spent cleaning out the radiator and oil cooler. The oil cooler was 80% clogged and the radiator had 5 inches of star cracks in the side mount and a short crack on the tank mount on the bottom. I carefully TIG welded them up with lots of cooling air. A quick very light coat of NAPA chassis black and they should be dry by now. It has been snowing all morning. It is not sticking. Thankfully.
I appreciate the ideas. Can't wait to fill the shop with smoke! :)

Yea it's a little over the edge i agree, but with the amount of money a person has invested in the build, in most cases it's a proverbial drop in the bucket.

Yes, so very true.

So I am trying to find the specifications on the sending units for the Trans temp, and cooling temp senders. How many ohm's. The Stewart Warner units have mixed reviews and some state that they put in the original senders for reliable function. I will be ohm'ing
the senders today and comparing to the S/W units. I suspect I may go as far to put a mechanical gauge on the oil pressure to check actual pressure to the gauge readout. Just a temporary check to see how it relates to the electric sender. I am betting on a royal mess removing the trans sender way down low on the case like it is. I may just run it. I'll compare readings today and decide.

I have parts hanging all around my woodstove in the shop. Forced paint drying. It looks like a giant mobile hanging there.
The radiator and shroud go in this morning in a little bit. I am about ready for fluids. I am done detailing and painting parts. The exterior will have to wait for some other lifetime. :) I've got trucks and wagoneer's to build.

Well shucks... It runs :D I put some long days in and just fired it off about two hours ago. 60 PSI oil pressure at 1000 RPM. A couple restarts and it fired off before one complete revolution each time. I shut it down and will try to break in the engine tomorrow by following the manual with some type of load. The brand new wire harness went in beautifully. Every missing wire was replaced and the harness I built back to original spec's with correct wire colors and proper plugs for OEM hook ups to an original JD voltage regulator and Motorola alternator if anyone ever wants to put those back. Why I will never know. I will show later how I hooked up the GM internally regulated CS130 80 AMP alternator. I had to only add one wire and it hooked up using a vacant spot in the OEM terminal block on the firewall. And a vacant available packard 56 connector (energized with the Key On) behind the gauges, Piece of cake.
All the lights now work. And that strange ticking is a now functional hour meter. I pick up a new front idler Tuesday down in Spokane.
No extra stops, just get the part and come home for health's sake.
I have a very messy shop to clean up. What a winter project this engine has been. This crawler is in better shape than it has been in a long time. I guess I will sell my stock in coolant. I won't be needing drums of it any more.

Well it has been a haul. If I did not feel the need to polish every lock washer. It would have been done sooner.
So later today, I have been trying to figure out how to load it up as the manual states. I will be using the clutch pedal on shifts because I want to break in the engine clutch. And I figured I would drag my 4000 pound Jeep CJ first in two wheel drive shut off for a light drag from the front. Then for the manuals full load statement, lock the CJ in 4x4 and drag it down the driveway. I lost all the snow I needed for a sustained push. Now that we are in the middle of a thaw, the ground away from the driveway is so soft, I could get it very stuck. It's either that or wait for two months for some dirt work. I don't have that much patience. :)

I hardly had any smoke on start up. I coated the cylinder walls well with engine oil. It fired and I closed the injector connections. Barely made a full rotation and it fired again. It runs as smooth as ever. I could not be happier.
Well at least as long as I don't look at the shop I now need to clean. Like a bull in a china shop....

Good morning,

I was wondering through your rebuild thread and something caught my eye. In you air cleaner group of pictures, there is a pre-cleaner type setup(plastic dust collector type). That particular setup is for non-turbo engines. The parts catalog calls for a simple covered cap (AT33360) for the turbo engines. The cap type is still available from Mother Deere and are not too much $$$. I had ordered one about 4 months ago. May be the precleaner restricts air flow too much for the turbo. May be not, just thought I would point this difference out.

Best regards,
Bruce

So it looks like in the 450c dozer jdparts list the precleaner is listed for turbo and non-turbo. But if you go to the 450c loader jdparts, the part catalog clearly separates the two air cleaners, between non-turbo and turbo. The thought that the pre-cleaner was only for the non-turbo engine may have been an “older opinion” and now it is acceptable. Anyway, glad to hear the crawler is moving!!!

Very interesting Bruce. I assume you meant the precleaner dust bowl up top? Or the two filters in the big filter can between the legs?
Regardless I will investigate tonight when my day is done. I am curious and want to correct it if it is not correct.

I did not drag my Jeep. I pushed on two very large snow piles I still had. To the point of spinning tracks from a huge load.
I am not done breaking in the engine.
I have noted that I can't hear my turbo at all. Shutting down the (old) engine I could hear it spool down with a steady whosh that slowed to silence with a shutdown. Not a peep. Also... I am afraid to try a clutchless HLR shift. I had it adjusted perfectly with a pressure gauge before the engine replacement. I wanted to hook up the gauge and verify pressures before slamming it with a bad shift. The engine clutch needs to beak in anyway.

The dozer is out of the shop and under a tarp. This is so great to be at this stage. Today I have a major mess in the shop to clean up. It will take all day. Boxing good parts and putting tools away. Tuesday I pick up a new idler. The last trip we are making for a while. Straight there and back.
We are starting to get covid 19 cases here. I am used to solitude. I could go all summer if I have to.

Everybody stay well.
Thanks Bruce for the heads up on the air filter system. I'll have a look.

Yes, the plastic cup dust collector. Not the dual paper filter elements.

Thanks Bruce. I did not get a chance to look yet. My upper dust collector has the vane style lower housing to get the airflow spinning. I'd be surprised if it was a restriction. I will have a look though. I just returned from Spokane and purchasing a new front idler. My left one has about 14 inches of edge broken off. This thing is worse than owning a boat. But just as fun.

Having owned one in the past, I always liked the definition of a boat as a hole in the water into which you throw money.
