Manual for 450 dozer

Post by Dixon700 » Thu Oct 24, 2019 8:33 am

I recently got a jd 450. So far I've found the winch needs rebuilt, new PTO coupler, and either right side steering clutch or brake band. I'm a very competent he truck mechanic, but have no knowledge of tracked equipment, so I need to get a manual.

Get both parts and service, not that much extra, saves the hassle of looking up parts online all the time, and service manual does not show part numbers, so all around easier. Manuals are pretty much readily available, I can get them for you if you are having trouble. I also stock steering clutch parts for the 450 as well.

Would I just get them from my local John Deere dealer or should I look online for them?

Dealer is really pricey, I would look online.

If you don't get the manuals from Lavoy or new from JD (they have a bookstore where you can buy them without going to the dealer https://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/), look for used originals. You are likely certain you have a straight 450, but be sure of your model and serial number as the manuals are different for the different series of 450's. There is a list of the manual publication numbers for each of the models and series, posted by Stan Disbrow on the FAQ Board (about the 17th down). You can check to see that you are looking at the right ones by checking the publication number. And watch the wording of ads, some of the reprints try to combine the series. I would also consider getting the operator's manual, as those usually cover normal service, lube, and adjustments, some of which is not in the service manuals.

I have gotten a few reprints for wheel tractors and equipment from Peaceful Creek that I am satisfied with the quality of. I would not recommend getting Jensales due to many posts on forums of poor quality. I&T works for a second manual but the two I "inherited" skip some details and info is sometimes incomplete, occasionally they do have a picture or wording that helps. Good manuals are well worth the cost. JMHO

Anyone buy manuals from farm manuals fast? It's about $30 cheaper than peaceful Creek?

I haven't seen any of their products, so can't say anything about their quality. It doesn't appear they have an Operator's manual which you will want to get as well. The operator's manual has lubrication and maintenance info that is not included in the service manual. Dealer mechanics would have access to both in the shop and they were both used. I put the link to the on line parts catalog for your 450 in one of your other posts.
