JD350 crawler loader engine

Post by DSMason » Thu Nov 07, 2019 10:06 pm

My search for a decent machine is over. Found a JD350 right nearby. Good tight undercarriage, big backhoe attachment, easy starting, no smoke, etc. But about one hour of light use and the engine blew! Centre cylinder has lost compression, moderate tapping noise.
I changed out the lift pump, fuel filters, and started bleeding out the injectors, replaced that one on number two. No difference. Called in the local dealer service man and he said “better find a parts machine with a good engine ‘cause the parts to rebuild these oldies are not available”. Really? Is he right?
I’m in BC, Canada but I can pick up orders just south of the border if necessary. The oil pressure is good so I’m hoping to get away with an in-frame repair. Liners, pistons, etc. and go deeper as needed. Can anyone recommend an after market parts supplier?
Thanks!

Contact Lavoy (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com), his business provides this site for us to use. He works on crawlers and sells quality parts for them. It will be a good idea to include your serial number when you do as there were changes during production runs.

He is not even remotely correct, 350 engine parts are readily available. I would have to do some more research and would need engine serial number, and possibly whether o-ring in block or on sleeve. But, still should not be an issue.

Before rebuilding entire engine, you should pull the valve cover off. You may have a valve problem on that cylinder. I've seen an adjuster work loose and seems like I had to install a slightly longer bolt and put a jam nut on it. If you do this, be sure not to install too long of a bolt that it hits the valve cover. I think this machine was a 350B.

Hi,

Your dealer guy there a Yellow one, or a Green? If Yellow, I can see where he might say that. I don't recall they used it in anything other than the JD350 series.

The essentially same engine is still in the 5000 series machines at every Green dealer, everywhere. Deere has made so many Green machines with 152, 164 and 179 CID 3-cyl engines that I would not be surprised if they have now made more of them than they did 2-cyl combined..... and, those sizes are just the Diesels. They also made Gassers. And sold a lot for military Gensets. And, on and on and on we can go.

1020 is the same engine, and 1520 is similar, tons of them used.

Hi,

Yup. 1020 used the 3/152, 1520 used the 3/164. There was a second coming of the 820 that used a slightly smaller 3 cyl in both gas and diesel. Then the 1520 became the 1530, then the 2040, and, well we all get the idea. It kept on, eventually becoming the current 5045D with a 3/179 turbo. And, there are higher HP models sitting on your local Green JD Dealer's lot, all using the 3 cyl wet sleeve engine.

Most of the JD 350s used the 3/152. Later build 350Cs got the 3/164 and the last of the 350Ds got the non turbo 3/179. I have a 1978 JD 350C parked right beside a 2008 5103. A 3/152 and a 3/179T and 30 years apart. :)

Thank you, Guys! I left the machine sitting for a while and dropped the ball. But back at it now, and the head is off.
I found those two middle cylinder valves with a white residue on them and looking dark (burnt?) on the contact areas. Planning on taking it to a machine shop for a grind. Can’t see anything wrong with the piston or cylinder walls.
So I’m tempted to pop her back together without going any deeper just now. Oil pressure was always good, even when hot.
What do you think?
TIA, Dave

I'd recommend cranking the engine over with the valve cover off before running it. You should see that there is oil getting topside. I rebuilt a 350B and took the head to a very reputable machine shop that I've used for years. I got lucky, in a sense, because the injection pump was faulty it wouldn't fire up. I removed the valve cover to assure myself that I had adjusted valves correctly and found no oil getting topside. As it turned out, there was a blockage in the oil route preventing oil thru. Had the machine started, I would have made as mess. Even a good machine shop can make mistakes.

Engine is finally coming apart! Oil pan is off, not much to see there. Only #2 piston is sloppy in the bore and was not firing, lacking adequate compression as fuel delivery was okay (new injector).
Next I’ll get that piston and liner out, but I suspect I’ll need liners and rings and pistons (?). Is that normal? Or should rings and liners be enough? The piston slap from #2 has me worried!
The engine # is 080413T on the riveted plaque.
TIA guys,
Dave
