hydraulic pump

350B dozer w/6way--Replaced the outer shaft seal. I got help here for the part # and called the local JD for availability. Happy to find that it was in stock but, when I got there I found the seal was too large so, I had the parts guy check the seal for a 1010 pump and found it to be the correct size but, had to have it shipped from another dealer. I believe the pump to be the original one installed on the machine so, I guess JD must have been using up their left overs.
A question I have is: should I fill the pump with as much hydraulic fluid as possible before installing it so it doesn't run dry before pulling fluid from the reservoir? Or, will the fluid gravity to the pump when the "in" line is being attached?( assuming the fluid level is correct in the reservoir)

If it has some oil in it, not washed out and completely dry, it should pull oil through it just fine if you have the reservoir filled to the proper level before starting the engine. The reservoir is above the pump so gravity helps.

Just curious on the seal. What was the part number for the one you ended up with? Were you able to determine the pump maker? Webster, Cessna, Gresen, etc.? Just thinking that having that info here might help someone in the future if they are searching for pump info as you were, since it doesn't seem to match the parts catalog.

I would bump the starter several times to pull some fluid in at a slower speed.
