Rotating flywheel for timing on 450c

Post by Tphollomon » Wed Jan 22, 2020 1:00 pm

To insert the flywheel locking pin to set top dead center i am told to rotate flywheel with large screwdriver. The only only access is where on my 1986 straight blade 450c. Using the starter is not good due to momentum. Cummins diesels have a hole for a barring tool that engages the ring gear. Front crank bolt is not easy access.
Thanks much !

WHen you remove the pin and cover from the left side at the flywheel you can get a screwdriver in the access hole to rotate the engine via the flywheel ring gear.

I believe they want you to turn the engine over in the same direction as it turns when its running. If you pass the spot, keep on going around until you get to it again.

Hi,

There is a tool for that. Essentially a pinion gear which goes in the hole. Put a ratchet on the other end to turn the engine over.

Stan,

You wouldn't by chance have that PN? That sounds like something handy to have.

DrLoch and others
Thanks, I was hoping that the flywheel teeth were accessible through that same hole. Hope doesn’t work out for me (hope is not a strategy).
Really appreciate the help.

Just did it last spring. Big screw driver or small pry bar through the timing pin hole

Hi Stan,
I never saw this tool you're referring to but, I remember a pin that is actually one of the bolts that hold the bellhousing to the engine. I took the bolt/pin out and then roll the engine over until the pin end of the bolt slips into a hole/divot in the flywheel. I know it wasn't on a 450 but, I don't know what it was on. Maybe a 350.

Hi,

There are different tools by era. Might also be by engine type. Probably best to check the special tools section in the service manual for what you have.

I had one for my 68 350 and it works on my 78 350 but not on my 08 5103. All are 3 cyl diesels. I went to my Deere dealer and their are about sixteen such tools listed in the ServiceGard catalog. Took a while to figure out which one went to my tractor. Actually, wound up being two kinds, as the 5103 I have is a Phase III and there was a change. And, there was no matching machine in for service so no way to check. Had to order both then take them home to figure out which one I wanted.

FWIW, the bellhousing on the 3 cyl engines have a pair of holes on the left side. The tool and pin go into the holes and you rotate the flywheel with a ratchet until the pin finds a hole in the flywheel. The old tool is three pieces and the new tool is just the drive part, and is larger than the old tool.

I use the pin off the old tool, but of course they will sell a new pin. I just didn't buy it because I already had a pin. And I knew it would work because I had already used it with the screwdriver method at the same time I figured out that the old tool didn't fit.
