450B

Post by timmtnman » Wed Feb 05, 2020 5:44 pm

Looking at this crawler to buy. Serial number is 450BD 180391T. I believe it's a 74, but dont know what the D and T mean. Straight blade with a winch. One track sags and the other is tight. Tracks look good and the the sprockets are worn. What are things to look for before purchasing. And what would be a fair price. Also has ROPS.Looks pretty solid and not beat up. Thanks for any advice.

D = 6410 outside blade
T = John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works (build location)

When you say the tracks look good, are you referring to how the pads and grousers look? I would expect the chains to be worn it the sprockets are worn. How close to the ends of the track frames are the idler brackets? Stan Disbrow posted a great article on Understanding Undercarriage on the FAQ Board. If you aren't familiar with checking undercarriage it will help you with things to look at and how they are checked. Not saying measurements are everything but it really is meaningless, in my opinion, if someone says the undercarriage is 50% with no measurements to back it up.

Yes,the pads and grousers look good. Grousers are over an inch tall. The idlers are about 2 1/2 inches back .

It is good the pads and grousers look good, but the condition of the chains, rolls, idlers, and sprockets are more important in determining the amount of wear, life remaining, and how well the tracks will stay on, in my opinion. Is any grease visible around the adjuster on the track that is slack? That could be a sign of a bad seal in the adjuster.

A lot like your 350B look for loose or broken bolts holding the clutch housing and transmission. Operate it and see if the steering shifting and brakes function properly. Look for leaks.

Hard to say what is fair, prices very a lot by area it seems. I have seen them for 3500, 19,500, and every where in between, and the prices don't always follow the condition if compared to each other.
