I would also be interested in getting one. I just a 450B that has one but it is bent up and has rust holes in it. The board and straps are good. Thanks

Ok, I will put you on the list. I am still waiting on the arrival of the OEM parts. Probably will be here tomorrow. I will keep the progress posted.

I came home from an errand day and had a box waiting for me. I received Stans tool tray, the plywood support board and one metal strap that holds everything in place. Thank you Stan!

So I measured the tool tray metal. The main body of the tray is 16 GA just like the vandalism cover. The end walls on the tool tray are 18GA and a shade thinner. If it is not a big deal to everyone, I want to make the whole tool tray out of 16GA. This ads a very slight bit of strength and better rigidity for the handle. Every other part, the handle, the lower board, and support straps will be an exact match. So if any of you folks that want one and it needs to be an exact copy with an 18 GA end panel,(for the crawler and tractor show) ... I will ask that you let me know. So for now I am planning on all sheet metal being 16GA.

I will get started on pattern making in a day or two. Then get all the metal here. I am looking forward to it. :)

Making it all 16GA is a good idea. Heavier is better for a crawler! Right? LOL

Absolutely... With the age, super mild corrosion and what looks like a re-coat of black paint, it is a bit flimsy.

Will do 77 ford.

I am having issues finding 3/8 plywood for the wood tray that is not warped. Seems I have a significant curve in every sheet. I may have to go to marine or cabinet grade. I will keep looking and find a solution.

The other thing is.... When I get a request for a tool tray, could you guys tell me if you want just the tool tray, or the tray, wood board and metal support straps. I have a lot going on here, but I will do my best to produce in a timely manner. :)

Thank you for that info everyone. I am done drawing all the parts with dimensions for the file's. Next is fiber board patterns and start cutting out parts.. I hope to have a stack of newly made parts by the end of the weekend. I hope it warms up a bit when it is time for paint. 6 degrees this morning. Brrr.

OK guys, small issue. While fabricating my first one, I went for a test fit on my 450C. I was fortunate to still have one support strap on my machine and with Stan's support strap and board he sent I was able to try a test fit. I found an interference fit with even Stan's OEM tool tray. I am assuming this might be an issue with other machines. The tool tray hits the plate that has the shift slots. It makes removal of the tool tray difficult and only comes out with a rearward twisting motion that is sure to make all the tools in the tray slide into one end and cause frustration. And scratching the periodic maintenance sticker.
Question for Stan, Do you recall if this problem happened to your machine?

Please see the pictures.

Stan's OEM tool tray.

The new part.

The only way it will come out.

This is how much side to side room there is. The tray can slide just a little under way.

Image

The simple solution is to make a new pattern and make the tray 1/8 or possibly 3/16 narrower so it is not such a wrestling match.
I plan on doing this but wanted to inform everyone who wants one that this is what I found. . It is my normal practice to keep who ever I am working for very well informed to head off any problems later with everything all done. I will proceed with narrowing the next few trays. Stan, I'd be interested in knowing if you had any issues with the tool tray not coming straight up and out like it should.
Thanks all.

Al

EDIT:: I measured my gap and it is exactly 7 1/8. Stans tray is 7 1/4 at the top and 7 1/8 at the bottom. The bottom of the tray still does not fit when trying to push down from the top. I will aim for 7 inches wide.

Hello Al,

Thank you for the up date and photos. Some of the problem may be with the plate. I believe the block that is pictured toward the front is supposed to be placed to the back. I believe it is to the back to prevent the tool tray from touching the negative battery cable at the back of the battery box.

I may have a tassel of a time getting the tray out rearward or to the side, as I have a forestry package on my tractor loader.

Try flipping the plate. There should be a block on the bottom of the plate to prevent the plate from slipping forward, in a since locking the plate in the under lying straps.

I think going narrower is a fine idea. I would like it to be functional.

Just my thoughts,

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

When I put all the parts in to test fit I messed with the wooden tray a few different directions. Since I did not know for sure. I took some pictures to show what I have here. The way it is now, the tool tray board only moves about 1/2 inch at best. The block in front keeps the metal tray from sliding forward off the wood. Take a look... Finger hole to the back.

Image

When I turn it around with the block in the back by the negative terminal, The wood tray slides about three inches before the underside block stops it. And with no upper block the metal tray slides all the way forward off of the wood and hits the front stopping at the padlock loop that is welded on. About 6 inches of travel. Here is the underside. Finger hole to the front.

Image

So do I have it in backwards? I tried Stan's OEM tool tray in both configurations, it still hit the front gap and would not come out that way.. I did find that lifting the tray with no twisting out of position, to the back of the compartment lid hinge area, it did come out with just a hair of clearance. See picture below where the tray has to go to come out. Not as bad as what I showed before.

Image

It still will rub the maintenance decal. So I have two 7 inch wide trays ready for welding the end panels in. They just barely clear the front opening but will come out without a ton of effort. Please tell me if I still need to reverse the board. And if you want a wider tool tray I can make it that way. The difference is not really noticeable.

I forgot to add earlier. The metal straps that hold all this up are an odd width at 1 3/4 wide. Rather than cut down metal that will take a lot of time to make perfect, I ordered a 20' strip of it last week and it is coming from a city a few hundred miles away. I could not find it even in Spokane. It will be here Thursday. 20 feet was the minimum and not a big deal as I can use it on other projects. I will get the metal trays done soon for those that only want the tool tray. I will need to dry the paint for a few days so it does not stick to the packing material. So slow going is what I am getting at here. Things are faster in the summer for me.
Thanks all for the patience...

Al

I was just looking back to see who wanted what and noticed the ebay picture of the tool tray that has compartments was on the board the same way. Not really noteworthy since the new wood parts I am going to make will be a direct copy. I am still curious if it is really backwards. :)
