A “Thank you” for Lavoy and Inj pump question

Post by Labparamour » Sat Feb 08, 2020 8:08 pm

First, I want to thank Lavoy for fixing me up with new injectors for my 450B.
Very reasonable price and they came adjusted and ready to install.

The hardest part of the job was getting the dang new rubber washers down inside the nuts for the return caps far enough to get threads to engage!

I’d originally tried getting some cheaper injectors and had read elsewhere that the person had to adjust the opening pressure. They included a link to the tester they used.
So, got the pressure tester and checked the injectors- only one had correct opening pressure and good spray pattern.
One of the others had a stripped out adjusting screw.
So, “Hello Lavoy, I need...” Should have been my first move!

Now, question about injection pumps:
The issue- listening to injectors with mechanic’s stethoscope, #2 sounded like more of a “clack” (I checked the internet and it’s a legitimate mechanic’s
term  ).
The old Injectors all opened 2-400psi under spec and noted nothing unusual about #2.
With new injectors in, machine sounds good (maybe my imagination...like your truck running better after waxing).

Anyway, listening now, 1, 3 & 4 all sound like listening to hydraulic valve lifters. #2 still has a bit of a solid sound with the soft sound of the spring...
So, could the injector pump cause this?
As said, the machine runs well and I don’t think I’ll immediately change out the pump if it is the likely cause.

Thanks, Darryl

Darryl, as a suggestion , after engine is warm, idling, trans shift lever locked in neutral, crack each injector fuel line, one at a time, and see/ hear if engine sounds the same, as each one is opened. If engine sounds same( especially #2) , I would lift rocker cover off and do a valve set. You may be hearing a wide rocker setting.

As Sam said, maybe a little bit of air in the line. Rotary pump normally should not be low on just one injector I would think, but maybe possible.

I appreciate the reply.
Should have mentioned: had the valve cover off last summer to check clearances- they all were within spec.

Certainly worth trying. Thanks guys.

I’d left the #2 line loose and cranked to bleed when all new injectors in.
When running, had to tighten a couple others that were weeping.
Haven’t put under load but, don’t hear a miss and didn’t have a miss while working previously.
I just thought it odd that I heard the noise from both old and new injectors on just #2.

If you have nothing better to do, you might try swapping a couple of injectors including NO 2 to see if the noise stays the same or moves with the injector. Just a thought.

Thanks.
You guys have given me a couple things to try.

Weather still hit and miss so will see how she does when actually working this spring and try some of the diagnostics suggested.
