450B power steering pump

Post by Labparamour » Sun May 03, 2020 7:27 pm

So, gonna test my power steering pump pressure per manual with a gauge but, thought I’d see if anyone has an idea what I have going on.

450B with power steering pump that doesn’t have reservoir- uses fluid from transmission.

When pulling on steering levers, there is a rapid pulsing felt in the handles.

Was wondering if it might be the actual pump or relief valve in the pump housing.

Thanks,
Darryl

So, I know this thread has caused much debate. I thought I’d follow up.

Figuring I was being conscientious, I had replaced tranny screen and fluid. Manual calls for 303 so used that.
After is when I noticed rapid pulsing in steering levers when pulling back- in gear or neutral.

Read in another forum, like was recently posted here in May, that 303 is crap and there’s no standard it must meet.
So, drained and used HyGard and back in business.

If it is the same pump and assist actuators as a 450, it probably has air in it. I put new seals in the actuators and it took a long while to bleed the air. If you look in the reservoir, you will see fluid being pumped and air bubbling up when you pull the sticks. Now, no pulsing. I used hyguard, but just because I had it on hand.

Thanks for the suggestion.
My B uses the Fluid from the tranny for steering pump.
Changing to HyGard made for immediate improvement.
Didn’t want to risk damaging tranny using 303.
