JD 350B Steering Issue
JD 350B Steering Issue
I was running the dozer yesterdayand suddenly lost my right side steering brake/clutch. I opened it up to adjust the steering clutch, and found something interesting.
It looks like the tab on top of the brake crank arm that the set screw engages on is worn badly. The previous owner had put a nut on the end of that bolt, im guessing so it would engage the tab. I have not been able to figure out a way to get any engagement.
Looking in my service manual the only reference I can find to that part is calling it the brake crank arm. Is that something that can be replaced, or will i need to get into a bigger project? Also anyone have part # information for that part.

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
Here is a link to the 350B crawler (only) parts catalog. The JD parts book is free to use. Lavoy can get you a copy through his store if you want a hard copy. If you look at the steering section, brake linkage assembly page, I think you are talking about item # 10, lever T23624. Arm, item 13, has the adjusting bolt (#15) and locknut (#14).
It may be a bigger project as the condition of the brake band and steering clutch is unknown and may be the actual cause of the issue. If the bake lining is worn out the travel may be out of range and what the previous owner did was a patch instead of doing the repair.

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
That is definitely the part in seeing, this small ear that i have circled is what appears to be broken or worn off. It seems that the PO had placed a nut on the end of the adjusting screw so that it would contact the ear.
How would you be able to tell if there was a bigger issue? I never really had any steering issues prior to this happening at all, and the foot brake works well.

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
Also does anyone know a source for that part?
Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
Lavoy repairs and sells parts for JD crawlers. His store provides this site for us to use, so it is good to support him when we can. Send him an email (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com) or give him a call (phone number is on the home page) during Central time zone business hours. He will tell you if that is a part he has or can get for you. If he can't I would suggest checking with a John Deere Construction Equipment dealer (yellow equipment). When I looked at the site of the dealer I use, it showed as available to order, but only your dealer can say for sure. Beyond that it would be a salvage yard item.
You might want to add your general location to your profile, someone might know of a place to check near you.

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
I emailed Lavoy
I am in central PA, I have a JD dealer fairly local so I will check with them. I'm sure price is nasty though.
Does anyone know how you would go about removing and replacing that part?

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
I have a service manual and it doesnt have any of that information, what kind of manual do I need?
Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
Something is odd, a Deere factory service manual should have detailed instructions for removal of the final drive.
In a nutshell, split the track, pull the final, and then remove steering lever shaft and associated parts.

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
As a follow up, upon further review it looks like the pin wiggled itself out of the,end of the brake band, and it is just laying in there loose.
Im assuming by looking that i will need to pull the final out to get that pin back in the band?

Re: JD 350B Steering Issue
Yeah, unfortunately I'm guessing that is the case.

So, that pin ended up beong sheared off once we got in there and looked. It is part number 23b in the brake linkage assembly picture. Does anyone know the actual part number for it, or where i can find one?
