‘79 455G - breaking tracks

Post by trevelynzx » Sun Jun 14, 2020 11:11 pm

Hey guys, back for more advice. Need to rebuild the track tensioning cylinders on both sides of the crawler. Have the kits in hand, but not sure how best to break the tracks. Two issues -

1) The tech manual says the master pin has a dimple on it. But almost all my pins have dimples. I think i found one that doesn’t, so i assumes it was reverse and that’s the master pin. Confirm/ deny from your experience?

2) No easy access to a hydraulic pin press. Saw some Youtubers use big C clamps and heat. Lots of hammering. What’s your advice on getting the master pin pushed out?

If all of your pins have dimples then it most likely has had lubricated track rails installed at some point. They're also known as salt tracks. Don't ask why they call them salt tracks because I do not know. I'm sure there is a good answer for it but I just never asked. Lubricated tracks do not have a master pin, rather they have a master link instead. The master link will be bolted together using the track pad bolts. In other words the bolts go through the pad just like all the others but they thread into the link instead of having nuts on them. This link will appear to be solid underneath the pad. I hope this helps and good luck.

Actually SALT Is an acronym. And I generally hate Acronyms when they are not explained once. BLM= Bureau of Land Management.

Hi,

Now we can get into US Gov't TLAs: Three Letter Acronyms. Like NASA. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Except, they get four letters because they are more advanced than the BLM. And, a true acronym since it is pronounceable. Not that this requirement for an acronym would bother anyone in the Gov't from calling anything an acronym. ;)

Thanks Jim... Now I know. :D Most likely I was told that somewhere along the way but I have slept a lot since then.
