350B dozer no power

Post by gregjo1948 » Mon Jul 06, 2020 4:35 pm

Working a 350B about 5 minutes and the right track started slipping. Within about 2 more minutes, the right side wasn't pulling at all. It was a dead track forward or backward. The right clutch/brake was functional but that was all. Left side was working as it should .I was able to get to the shop but I'm at a loss where to start figuring out the cause of the problem. I appreciate your input on this matter. gregjo1948

Hi,

Sounds like the steering clutch pack has failed. I had that happen once on my 420. It went all at once with a screeching noise. New fiber discs were all it needed. They just got to be too thin.

Thank you for the reply but, I must say, you're not a lot of fun. I've been into the steering clutches on the green crawlers and 1010s but not a 350B. This machine stopped driving on the right side so quickly, I thought there might be something new and different in the steering clutch system on the 350 series. I was in a short but, serious, push when I felt the right side slip and within 2 more of these short pushes, I had no power on the right track. This machine has power steering and I thought there might be something involved there that could fail. When the right steering lever is pulled, the clutch is releasing and the brake is applying. Is there some sort of adjustment that could be out of whack? Maybe the power steering ????? You know I really don't want to tear this thing down to install new clutch discs. At my age, the bolts are even too heavy!!!

The power steering is just a booster cylinder, it won't affect the mechanical function. I seriously doubt that the problem is external unfortunately.

If you have done a 1010 then you can do a 350. They're a bit different but not that much. Your issue could be any number of things. One would be you have either oil or moisture in the clutch pack causing it to slip. Two would be the pressure plate has weakened to the point it no longer keeps the clutch pack engaged. A third thing would be you have striped the teeth out of the clutch fiber linings in the clutch pack. You may have even broken a drive axle on that side. Yet another thing would be your throwout bearing may have stuck the pressure plate in the disengaged position. I've seen all of these happen along with combinations of all the above. What ever the cause, you will most likely have to tear into this thing to find the answer. If it is moisture you may get lucky and dry it out and get by. Sorry to be the Debbie downer but you have work ahead of you I'm afraid.

Thanks guys for your input. Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and tear this thing down. I'll have to clear some shop space and get it done. I may need some parts from Lavoy if they're available. I'll let you all know what I find. gregjo1948

Hi,

Ah, I'm sorry to have also been Miss Debbie Downer. The 350B is a bit different from the 420c when it comes to steering clutch parts, but the design remains the same. Along with the tendency to just let go and quit driving the track.

This explains why my 'new' crawler is a 350C with the hydraulic wet clutches....

New means 1978 v 1958 as opposed to my heading to the Yellow Dealer with a trunk full of cash. ;)

It'll be a bit before I can get it in the shop but I'll probably be buying , at least, the fiber discs for the right side. If I get real ambitious, I'll do the left side too.

I would do the pressure plates and brake bands also. I just did a brake band on one side of mine and the other side I was just going to do the band also but did the discs, plates, and pressure plate also. I can tell a big difference in the steering from the new side and old side. That was my rookie mistake. Lavoy can help you out with all the parts you need.

What did it cost you for the parts? disc-plates-band

I planned on getting the parts from Lavoy, if he has what I need. I've gotten parts from him before and was happy with the deal and his willingness to share his wisdom and experience on the installation.
