shifting on JD 450

just wondering how trans (HLR) should work when right do you have to use the clutch ? Should the gear selector on left move without
depressing clutch?

I am pretty sure that you do have to use the clutch pedal when shifting the gear selector on the left. My 450 seems to grind every time I shift into 1-2-3-or 4. The HLR range selector should shift without the clutch being used if it is to the correct adjustment.

the HLR works fine no need for clutch except when first starting out.
The range selector on left seems to need engine idled down to go in
1,2 or even 3. wont shift between 3 and 4 even with clutch. Going to try to adjust and check pressure in a few days

The adjustment for clutch says to set 3 and 3/4 inch freeplay for pedal
To just where i feel the fingers on the clutch touch Will this be a very slight increse in pedal pressure. This is what I get just barely noticable
The HLR pressures are 120 across the gears

If you get 120 lbs across the power shift clutch pressures .That is perfect for good clutch contact .The collar shift transmission should shift through the gears with ease and you should feel the the gears and feel the shift through the syncro collars very lightly .Your main clutch needs to be set badly. Check that it is not jamming / seized or bound up on something.I have three new J series machines and an old 450E this summer I sent the old E out to one small job to save time for the Js and some one left the brake lock on it and the collar shift acted like that .While heading back to a large job I got on the radio and told the truck drivers that it was the easiest repair I did all year just check that brake lock .Digitup.

It is a good indicator that the clutches are in good shape on any power shift transmission if you have very little pressure fluctuation across the pattern when shifting every gear just watch .It is the first sign of trubble in that transmision Some dozers have the guage built right in and half of the operators don't know what is for I just got two of those old Deeres left a 350C WT and a 450E LT .The rest are 450J and two 550 Js and I don't think they will last as long as the old ones .And the worst thing about it is I paid 105 thousand more then Dad paid for our first 450 for one 550J!!.Good luck .
