450C engine in 450B?

Post by cordlesscarpenter » Wed Jul 15, 2020 5:19 am

Hey everyone, I have a 1973 450B crawler loader with backhoe that I'm restoring... I got a smokin' deal on it because the engine caught fire. I was able to get it hauled to my house and am getting ready to pluck the engine. In short, she needs a complete engine and I'd like to step up to the turbo 4.219T, verses the naturally aspirated 4.219D, does anyone know of any fitment issues I'd run into? Since the 4.219T wasn't available on 450Bs until way late in the game and are mostly only found in the 450C, not sure if all the mounts on my 450B are the same that would be on the 450Cs that the engine will likely have come from. I'd hate to buy a 4.219T thinking it will stab right in and then run into a bunch of problems. Thanks!

The only issues you run into are the intake plumbing into turbo. Otherwise it’s a direct bolt in. I would recommend going with a 4-239 which is the replacement for the 4-219. It has more torque and they start better. We did a 4-219 turbo to 4-239 swap in one of our yard use 450C loaders a few years ago.

Thanks! I'll look into the 4-239 for sure... I thought the 4-239 was a much newer engine with no hopes of a direct bolt in, didn't know it was the replacement engine for the 4-219. Propbably a lot easier to find a 4-239(T)?? I'm guessing I'd still have the intake plumbing issue if I went with a 4-239T (do they even have a turbo option? I'm guessing yes.) Do you know of any good places to source a complete 4-239(T)? (I do not have a salvageable core).

I'm having difficulties getting a line on the engine... 4.239T's seem to be hard to come by and 4.219T's even harder. After your advise JWB, the 4.219T is not even a consideration but with trouble finding a complete 4.239T, this is becoming a hair puller and I don't have much left as it is haha. What about a JD 4.039T? I heard they were the 4.239T replacement engine but now that I'm jumping basically 2 generations forward, I'm REALLY worried there might be fitment issues into the 450B from 1973. I've found a 4.039T the way I need it (EVERYTHING including radiator and all) AND rebuilt but again, fitment is the worry. Has anyone out there put a 4.039T into a 450B or know someone who has? Any experience or lessons learned would be amazing, thanks in advance!
