JD 350B boom locking bar

Post by zebqup » Mon Jul 27, 2020 9:17 am

My JD 350B loader is missing the boom locking bar and i am not having any luck locating one. Looks pretty easy to fabricate but I would like the specs on it first. Planning on doing an in-frame engine over haul next winter and this a must have item.

I have 2 pieces of 3" angle that I cut to fit, they lay on top of the exposed rod and get smashed between the top gland of the cylinder and the end. I use two but one really works. Mine's a 450c so I'm not sure my measurement would be the same. I would run the machine to top of stroke, subtract an inch and cut them to that size.

If you want a channel shape like the original weld a piece of flat bar (same length, width, and thickness as your angle) to one leg of the angle. 77 Ford's tip for length is great but if you don't have the head room, length of the support can vary to fit your space. Be sure it sets flat and square on the gland and is deeper than center line of the pin boss on the rod end of the support if you don't use 3" or larger, too shallow (less than center of pin boss) and it could kick out.

I just fabricated a lock bar today out of 3” angle iron (1/4” thick) and just used a grinder to cut to length. Therefore did not get perfect. With limited headroom I have the boom cylinders roughly level. Obviously the bar worked, but sitting here at home I started to wonder if there are any red flags. Mostly I thought that with the bucket more forward than up in the air there would be more pressure on the bar and cylinder and wondered if there is any damage risks. Jim B’s answer covers what I would have done if I read this first, but I guess I still have a chance to fix it.
Any further recommendations anyone? Thanks.

Many years ago we used angle iron but cut four extra 1" pieces. We welded these onto the ends of the angle iron to widen the pressure points, especially on the gland.

That’s kind of what I was worried about mostly (gland). Thanks. I will modify.

My angle bars have never even left a mark on my glands,I've got nice band saw cut pieces. I've never left them in for more than a few days while doing repairs. I'd feel comfortable leaving them in there for very long periods of time though.
