losing power 450c 1971

Post by campguy » Fri Aug 28, 2020 8:33 am

got a 450c that got stuck in the swamp and was worked pretty hard to get out. immediatley after it was out it started losing power, i havent really checked anything yet except engine oil. not burning any oil which im assuming means the compression is good still. any thoughts on things to check in terms of fuel system? still runs just not strong

When you say "losing power", do you mean, the engine is laboring/lugging or the machine isn't pushing/pulling as well as it should as if the clutches may be slipping? Did you get in the swamp deep enough to get water/mud in the fuel? I'd start by changing the fuel filters and blowing back thru the feed line from the tank.

I think he is right!! The key clue here is hung in a swamp! How deep and for how long? I would check everything. All of your filters, all of your fluids and if you doubt them change them. Check the vent on your fuel tank as it may have gotten plugged and as memory serves the air filter sits pretty low so it may have gotten flooded. There may be other issues as well but start with cleaning it up first and making all the simple things right. Hung in a swamp for any length of time is not a good thing.
