550G Torque Converter Leaking

Post by darrenrudolph83 » Wed Sep 09, 2020 7:41 am

Hello All,

I have a 94 John Deere 550G TC, it is leaking a good amount of trans fluid from the inspection cover on the bottom of the transmission. Id say its leaking 1qt every half hour, maybe even more then that, its a steady stream...

I know I have to pull the engine out of this machine to fix whatever the issue is, I am guessing the input shaft seal???

I have a few questions before starting this project, my dozer is in a remote place in AK so Ill be flying back and forth to work on it, so the more prepared I can be the better!

Has anyone had to do this before? What gaskets/seals do I need to have on hand to reinstall everything?
Should the torque converter be rebuilt while out of the machine? Is it possible that the torque converter is what is leaking and not the input shaft seal? The dozer pushes strong with no issues other then the leak.

Thank you

I’ll let you know in a few months. Have the same issue on a 450G. We have the dozer and cab off it make it a bit easier. We plan to pull the whole engine and torque assembly and swap out the entire torque and convertor with one on hand from a machine that had an engine fire

Thanks for the reply Jason!

I am hopeful to have mine done next month, there isn't much info out there on this that I can find. If I don't get much info beforehand I will update you after I get mine apart and repaired.
