450 straight reverser oil change?

Post by RAAAID » Thu Oct 01, 2020 8:20 pm

Anyone know how to change the oil in the reverser and what oil is used? Manual not very helpful. There's no issues with it just doing some maintenance.

What manual do you have?

There is a drain plug in the bottom of the transmission, a bit behind the face the transmission and clutch housing bolt together, to drain the transmission. There is a pick up screen in the transmission you should remove and clean. it is located behind a three bolt cover on the lower right side of the transmission. The spin-on filter in front of the radiator needs to be changed. You need to use John Deere Hy-Gard or an equivalent oil meeting the current J20C spec for Universal Transmission Hydraulic Fluid. The 303 oil called for in the manuals is outdated and no longer available; J20C replaces it. Aftermarket oils sold as 303 today do not and can not meet that old formula.

So the reverser is part of the transmission oil system? Reading around it sounded to me like it was a separate unit. There was mention of a dipstick in front of the steering controls under the Air filter housing. I've got a Deere service manual.

I don't have the 450 manuals, but from the ones I do have for other JD equipment I will say the following; others will correct me if I'm wrong. The 450 Operator's Manual OMT32592 is the best manual to have for your service needs, like your current project. You should get a copy of it. It covers maintenance and adjustments commonly done by owners and operators. Your service manual SM2064 is the technical level above that for mechanics doing diagnosis and repairs. The SM doesn't repeat all the info in the Operator's Manual as it would be common for a dealer's shop to have both, as well as the parts catalog for a machine, available for the shop's use.

Mechanically the HLR is a separate section in the transmission case, just as the differential is. The three mechanical sections in the transmission case (HLR,4 speed gears, and differential) of a 450 share the same oil. One dipstick in the top cover, as far as I know and is the only one shown in the 450 parts catalog. The 350s had two dipsticks, one for the reverser and one for the transmission. Do you have John Deere service manual publication # SM2064 for a straight 450 or do you have a different Deere service manual?

By printable do you mean a printed hard copy or a download you can print?

Lavoy sells manuals through his store. I don't know if he can get them as CDs or downloadable copies. Send him an email (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com).

The John Deere Construction and Forestry site where you can get printed, CDs or downloads is https://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/, Search 450 as the model.

If this link works it will open to a mix of equipment with 450 in the title. Scroll down the left side and check the Crawlers box and it should show you just the manuals for the 450 crawlers. https://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/searc ... attr=p0,p1
They show OMT23808 for 450 gas and diesel and OMT32592 for the 450 diesel. Loaders, dozer blades and backhoes all had separate manuals in the straight 450 years.

Thanks jimb. Looking for a download I can print. The link ou sent is showing a downloadable copy so going to try that later today and print it off. Having manuals shipped up to Canada is expensive for some reason.
