Hello again everyone,
I own a 450B (1973) crawler/loader/backhoe (engine was roasted in a fire). I'm having issues finding a suitable 4.219 or even 4.239 engine with everything I need (COMPLETE engine and ALL supporting systems) to do the swap, I've been calling around for months now with no luck. What I CAN find is a 4.039T which I was told was the engine that replaced the 4.239 and I'm assuming since the 4.239 replaced the 4.219 (which is what the 450B's came with then it should fit... right? I know I'll have issues with plumbing the turbo factor but I'm more worried about bell housing & shaft alignment/fitment, mounting brackets, etc. Has anyone ever done this swap or have any info?
Thanks!
Darrell
4.219D to 4.039T swap possible in 450B?

A 4039 will replace a 4219, I know of a 2030 wheel tractor that had a 4219 originally and has a 4039 in it now. A number of parts may need to be swapped, I won't say exactly what, but I believe in that case the original rear plate and flywheel were used. You may need to change some or all the front plate and timing gear covers. If you have power assist steering and a pump on the front cover, I don't think that opening will be on the 4039. Depending on what the engine came out of, the injection pump and governor may need some modification for your swap. Reportedly some applications use lighter blocks (for the same engines) than the crawlers, so be sure the blocks match. The light blocks are visually different, missing mass in some areas, when compared.
Jason (JWB Contracting) is one of your best sources of info on these swaps as they have done many swaps in their shop. You can also review this post by karbuf and see some things he is finding while doing a similar swap. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13570 And if you search there have been other posts here about swaps made over the years.

I’m shocked as you don’t have any 4-219’s available in your area. A 4-239 natural will be a power upgrade from a 4-219T. I have engines here in Edmonton Alberta but shipping would be offensive. Think I’m going to put a 276 in my 440B powershift skidder. Have to pull the engine to fix a major hydraulic leak so might as get a power upgrade.

Re: 4.219D to 4.039T swap possible in 450B?
The 440B project sounds sexy! As it sits now, I have purchased my land in Montana (about 8hrs south of you, 40 acres in the middle of the Kootenai National Forest) and thought about purchasing a skidder like that in addition to my tracked loader/hoe since I will be building a shop, forge and house with the timber from the land but I'm going to first attempt to do all the logging, road work, trenching, etc. with the 450B first and go from there... I'd rather not accumulate a bunch of equipment dedicated to one task as awesome as it sounds lol but I may shift my thinking once spring comes next year and the fun begins. You say the NA 4-239 is a power upgrade from a 4-219T, how does the 4-039T stack up against them? Are there any issues with that engine in general I need to be concerned with or is it a solid option? Also, Jim was saying you've done a lot of swaps in your shop, in fact I think the 4-039T idea came from a post you made in one of my other threads ha... have you done this particular swap? If so, what fitment challenges did you face? Thanks JasonJWB Contracting wrote: ↑Sat Oct 10, 2020 5:29 pmI’m shocked as you don’t have any 4-219’s available in your area.
