450c blade repair
450c blade repair
Have a 450c with a 6405 blade which is 6 way, when you push the top or bottom of blade there is about a inch of free play if not more. The slack is where the blade bolts for the tilt. Any idea what to do?
Re: 450c blade repair
Not knowing what it looks like makes it hard for any of us to say exactly what you need to do. Under normal circumstances there should be shims between the pivot points that you can remove to take out some of your slack. If the shims have already been removed then you will need to do some metal / weld up work to rebuild that area of the blade. Some pictures would help us determine what you need.

Re: 450c blade repair
Hello this is my first post . I also have a 450c with the same trouble its not quite as bad I still have 1 shim to go on mine. then you weld them up do you need to take the blade and have it milled smooth. grind it close to smooth and shim it . Randy
Re: 450c blade repair
No you don't need to have them milled back smooth. I mean that would be great but not very cost effective. Depending on how bad the wear is determines what I do to repair them. On some where the metal was worn badly enough I would cut that portion out and then weld in a new piece of metal to bring it back. Most were caught early enough that I could just build them back up by welding them with a 7018 rod. Then I just grind them with an angle grinder to get them back smooth. They don't need to be perfect, just close enough and smooth enough so they will pivot without binding.

How do you post a picture
Re: 450c blade repair
You either have to set up an account on the dedicated picture server site with Lavoy or use a 3rd party image host. When you are logged in you can read about the dedicated picture server on the Messageboard Q&A and Announcements Board.
For the present, if you want you can send me a PM with an email for you and I will send you an email you can send your picture to, and I will post it for you.

Re: 450c blade repair
Here is a picture of an angling frame Ryan asked to have posted. He will be along to discuss this.
Ryan, do you have a parts catalog or use the one on line? By the catalog those ends are replaceable, not that I think you want to do that, but studying the parts of the blade and angling frame will give you an idea of the parts that might be available if needed. I would weld them up where they wear against the shimmed guides. Take your time to keep the heat down.
If you look at the other side of that frame in the parts catalog there is a stub that fits into a hole in the back of the blade which the blade pivots on when it tilts. If that and the hole/bushing in the blade are worn the blade may bind when tilted as it can shift out of center between the guides. A couple more things to look at.
