JD350C winch shaft wear?
JD350C winch shaft wear?
Thoughts on the condition of this winch shaft in the back of my 350C dozer:
If replacement is recommended, where's a good place to purchase one?
Installation looks like I just pull the cover (3 bolts) and then slide the shaft out...or is there more to it?

Re: JD350C winch shaft wear?
What is the condition of the splines in the coupling that mates with it? How do the splines on the winch end and winch shaft look? Ideally, replacement I would say if the winch is critical to your operation. Occasional use, it could go a long time before it fails (splines strip). Lavoy is always the first place to check for your parts.
Re: JD350C winch shaft wear?
I'll check the coupling splines in the morning. If the coupling is just as worn would that lean towards replacing both sooner?
The winch will definitely be for occasional use.

The coupling on the winch looks pretty good.

Re: JD350C winch shaft wear?
That shaft is well worn in my opinion. It has enough wear, it is getting close to reducing the height of the splines. I would replace , while I had the winch off. The problem with intermittent use is that this shaft it turning when the engine is turning. So even though you are not using the winch , you are using the splines on this shaft.
A problem is availability of the shaft. If I could find it, I would replace it on my crawler. If I couldn’t find it, I may leave the roll pin out, and the coupler tied back to the winch away from this shaft and couple only when I would use. But that depends on how often I would use the winch.
Best regards, Bruce

Re: JD350C winch shaft wear? (Replaced)
I found a used winch shaft out of a 350B model with less wear than mine. I had some trouble pulling mine out and ended up drilling and tapping the end to accept a bolt. This allowed me to use a puller to get the shaft and bearing out. At some point some moisture had gotten in the case and caused the bearing to corrode enough that it was stuck.
The bearing was in rough shape and had a pretty good "catch" in it when spun. So the bearing and seal were both replaced.
Here is a picture of the puller setup in case any one needs to do something similar. There are nuts and big washers on the backside of the puller, barely seen on the right side. I turned the nuts a little bit at a time on each threaded rod to pull the shaft out straight out.
An alternate method would have been to pull the rear cover off the diff. housing and then pound the bearing out from the backside. This is how I had to get the 350B shaft out.

Re: JD350C winch shaft wear?
How did you drill the shaft in place isnt it hardened steel? Reason i ask, im using the winch shaft to drive my brush chipper and need to make some divets for set screws on the o.d. of the shaft for my adapter.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: JD350C winch shaft wear?
For drilling the end of the winch shaft I used a carbide tipped drill bit. The steel drilled rather easy, it didn't drill like hardened steel. I used a 18V hand held drill and it didn't struggle at all, and made nice chips while drilling. It also tapped easily with standard taps, so I don't think mine was hardened. Or it could be that the shaft is only surface hardened and since there is already a dimple in the end it was easy to get through the surface layer.

Re: JD350C winch shaft wear?
Thanks ill pickup a coupe of those bits and give it a whirl. I have to drill right at the splines, guess ill find out how hard the steel is there.
