450g fuel filter

Post by donkeys8 » Mon Mar 08, 2021 10:15 pm

I have a 1998 450g and need to know if changing the fuel filter requires bleeding the system. I changed all oil canister filters buy leery about the glass fuel filter.
Thanks for any info
Rick

Welcome to the Board.

Yes, it will require bleeding when you change the fuel filter. If you just change the filter and don't disturb anything else you should be able to bleed it right at the filter and not need to bleed anything else. Your operator's manual should give you the info on servicing the fuel system.

Does yours have the fuel/water separator between the fuel filter and tank? If it does, that should be serviced, before changing the fuel filter. It should have a drain on it and if you open the drain and only get fuel out of it, no water. just close the drain and run it a bit at half throttle to clear any air before doing the filter.

I would run the machine and get it up to temperature before servicing the separator and filter. Do the separator, start and run half throttle or better a few minutes, then shut down and change the fuel filter. When you have the new filter on use the hand primping lever on the transfer pump to fill the filter as you open the bleeder screw to let the air out of the filter. Don't try to start it until you have clear fuel coming out the bleeder screw, then close the screw and start it, again run half throttle or better a few minutes to be sure it is clear.

Thank you Jim for the info. I have a big service manual and it didn't give me any of the info you shared.
Thanks again
Rick

From the way it looks in the parts catalog not all of them had the fuel water separator, so yours might not have one.

Your service manual should consist of two publications, so it would be thick. First is TM1403 - 450G, 455G, 550G, 555G, 650G Crawler Operation & Test Manual. The second one is TM1404 - 450G, 455G, 550G, 555G, 650G Crawler Repair Manual. The Operator's manual (OMT163974), will have info on operating the machine as well as servicing and adjustments normally done by an operator or owner, as regular maintenance like changing filters, lube specs and capacity of systems. Those type things are not generally covered in the service manuals, which are for more in depth diagnosis and repair info for mechanics and technicians.

You can access John Deere Parts Catalogs at https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/.

Here is a direct link to your parts catalog (PC2154) https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/nav ... ment/56547

If you need an operator's manual you can check with Lavoy to see if he can get them, post back if he can't for other sources.
