450C delivered tomorrow

Post by Josh E » Fri Jul 09, 2021 8:15 am

Hello Everyone and thanks for the add!

I finally pulled the trigger on an early 80s 450c loader with backhoe. The new project is being delilvered to my farm tomorrow...hopefully! Everything seems to work well for the most part. She leaks coolant from somewhere (currently unknown) and requires a shot of ether to start. It has a very slow, lazy start...I noticed there is only one battery, so maybe two would help? I will need to do some work on the loader bucket as the cutting edge is almost completely gone. Anyone have a good resource for weld on cutting edges?

I will post serial numbers and pictures when it is delivered. Thanks again for the add and all of your help in the future!

Welcome aboard ! You'll soon be converted to another JD crawler minion for Lavoy, he's good like that. My old 450c is addicted to either too, I replaced my original starter with a newer high torque and I've always felt like it turns over slower, I'll be curious to hear if another battery helps that (I only have one).

My radiator had some damage that made a leak when I picked her up, I quick trip to the radiator shop cured that up quickly.

Just my 2 cents.

Get yourself a technical manual. It will really help you.

Also, please perform some type of pressure test on the cooling system to verify your wet sleeve(s) are in good condition and not leaking by. The last thing you want is run the "new" machine with coolant contamination in the engine oil.

Good luck. Check out my thread for lots of info and photos of my 450C and the work I have done on the old girl.
