Dust proofing a 10SI Alternator

Post by Cle Elum John » Fri Sep 24, 2021 11:18 am

Hello
I have a 450 straight. The original type alternator and the generic voltage regulator were replaced with an internally regulated 10si three wire system. It works great with the exception it pulls dirty air through itself and starts to act funny after a while. Ammeter jumps around and sometimes it may not be charging. A pressure wash seems to fix things for a while but I hate pushing water through it.

Question for the group: Is there a dry screen or easy-to-clean filter that can be added that will help the dust problem without restricting airflow? Ghetto is okay.

The only thought I would have is finding a marine alternator. They have fine mesh screens on them that may help with dust.

Is your radiator fan pushing or pulling?

Combine alternators had a dust screen attachment that went on the alternator to keep chaff and stuff out, easy to install, just need to find one.

It is a pusher fan. I contacted a couple of alternator suppliers. They were not much help. I will look for someone specifically supplying alternators for farm equipment. I did see the marine shield on a couple of 10si alternators. I will take another look at those. Maybe the marine alternator plus a chaff filter will work.

Thanks for the help
