John Deere 450

Post by Garymcd » Thu Dec 16, 2021 7:38 pm

Ok so I have a small issue with my little brat!

1st when I go to first gear and let out on clutch it will almost stall the motor and will not move. I have been working it in Second gear.

2nd and most important to my work is when shifting into low, high , or reverse it acts like the transmission is slipping. But let it move forward for 10-15’ and transmission is in full power lock up mode and pushes real hard.

Good morning.

Others may disagree, and be along with some other thoughts, but it sounds to me like you have a big issue developing. Binding up and not moving in first gear sounds like possible bearing issues in the transmission which could result in a catastrophic failure. As for the HLR engagement issue, it may be related, as that first few feet of movement are shifting gears and shafts (with bad bearings) into alignment. It could be an adjustment or pressure issue as well. Either way I would suggest stop running it, do diagnostic HLR checks shown in the proper service/technical manual for your series 450 so you know the status of that system, then tear into the transmission to find the problem there, before something is destroyed beyond repair. JMHO.

My only thought for this being a "small issue" is it if it were a linkage issue. If the linkage was so worn it's letting it be in two gears maybe or not getting into gear all the way?

Either way I would 100% figure this out before I used it at all, this could lead to a mountain of problems if that HLR grenades.

I just picked up a parts dozer the other day. I plan on pulling the transmission and rebuilding it. I know it is a big job to swap them out but that may be the best option. My grandfather ran the current dozer for years like it is. I know something is not right. I feel like the pressures are not right for the HLR but do not know exactly how to set them.

Sounds like you need the proper Operator's and Technical/service manuals (and a parts catalog if you don't want to use the on-line one) for your 450. The technical manual will have the info on checking and setting pressures and you should have it for your transmission overhaul. I expect Lavoy can get you the right manuals from his store. Contact him with your serial number (there are different manuals for the different series of the 450 model). You can email him (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com) or call the phone number on the home page during CST business hours.

I will get that done. Thanks for the advice. Is there a transmission filter or screen that I could check or clean

There should be a spin-on filter in front of the radiator and a cleanable screen in the right side of the transmission behind a three capscrew cover, the transmission must be drained before opening that one up. And you only want to use John Deere Hy-Gard or an equal fluid meeting the JDM J20C spec. The 303 shown in the manuals of that vintage is an outdated spec and there are no longer any fluids from any producer meeting the old JD 303 formula/spec, regardless of what the labels say.

Just to be sure. Is this a straight 450?

FYI
The truth about 303 oil
In the 1960’s, John Deere created the 303 oil that was used as an effective, high quality tractor hydraulic fluid for anti-wear on some heavy duty equipment. However, in the 1970’s the popular John Deere product was regulated and banned due a key ingredient being sperm whale oil. Because the whales are an endangered species and the sperm whale oil was outlawed, John Deere reformulated their oils and eliminated 303.

Some distributors and retailers are allegedly using the 303 marketing when some of the oils may be damaging to vehicles and allegedly don’t meet manufacturing standards.

One California man claimed that the 303 that he purchased from Tractor Supply ruined the hydrostatic drive and clutch pack on his machinery. Some plaintiffs have come forward to make claims against retailers and products such as:

Smitty’s – Super S Super Trac 303
Wal-Mart – Super Tech 303
Tractor Supply – Super S Super Trac 303
Orschelin – Premium 303 Tractor Hydraulic & Transmission fluid
Citgo – Milemaster 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid
O’Reilly’s – 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid

Re: John Deere 450 issue

Post by Garymcd » Fri Dec 31, 2021 5:08 am

It was a linkage issue. Goes into first gear now and pushed really strong. Now I have another issue. Working it today and started smelling a clutch burning and lost the left steering clutch after it gets hot. When cold both tracked pull very good but after 30-45 minutes the left steer clutch starts slipping. I just put new clutches in it. I do not really want to break it down again but looking like it is going to have to be done.

I did buy a parts dozer and thinking it may be easier to swap the engine and put it back to work. Question is. Is there anyway to check clutches on parts dozer before swapping engine out. The parts dozer supposedly ran u til they lost an engine

Garymcd, The first thing I would do is check the adjustment on the steering clutches and readjust as necessary per the specs. When I adjusted mine it was fine for awhile then, with use, I think they "broke in" and needed to be readjusted. I ran it some more then tweked them, a little, to my liking.

Also believe that you need the gauge to set the clutch on these. did you do that?
If so could be just needs throwout adjustment/brakes etc....movement of all parts kinda throw adjustment out..

The free play on the steering clutch most likely needs adjustment. As the discs wear, free play decreases.

Adjustment of the pressure plate is normally only done when clutch is removed from the tractor. This is where the tool comes into play.

No I didn’t have the gauge. I have since decided to pull engine and place in parts dozer. It is in a lot better shape. So after I get done I will have several parts to sell.
