1985 350c isolator

Post by Mechanickyle » Sat Dec 25, 2021 8:50 pm

Hi
Does anybody have a contact to buy standard or upgraded isolator for 350c
I can hear noise coming from the bell housing area and think I need to pull the engine and see what's going on
Thanks for any info
Kyle

I have the later isolator available, but you will need to source a used flywheel from a later crawler to install it,

Laboy
Thanks Do you have any leads for a place to find a later flywheel? And what years would I be looking for
What is the cost for the isolator?
Thanks Kyle

Salvage yards for industrial equipment is best guess, you need RE15923 flywheel.
Isolator is $1500.

In the online parts catalog, it looks like that flywheel was used in crawler serial number 706658 and the machines after that one. It also was used in the 350Ds.

If you add your general location to your profile someone might happen to know of something in your area.

So I pull the engine and find that it has already been up graded to the new style rubber isolator everything looks in great condition
I'm now thinking that the clunking/knocking sound I'm hearing when I shut the engine down must be coming from the reverser although it works fine other than getting warmer than I think it should
Trying to decide on pulling the reverser or running it
Any thoughts?
Thanks Kyle

Are you aware that 350's have a distinct clunking noise at start up and shut down? Even with the later isolators they still make a lot of noise. Your machine may be normal. Check the input shaft for play both up and down and in and out. If that checks out okay I really don't think you have a problem.

Leonard
Thanks for the advice after reading several discussions on the internet I now understand that the clunking is normal
I just wanted to make sure that nothing was coming apart
The input shaft on the reverser has about .002 end play
And no oil leaks from the reverser seal or the engine rear main seal So i set the engine back in yesterday and will finish reconnecting everything this week
Thanks again Kyle

It is good that you are willing to question a noise rather than not heed to it at all. Always better to take a look so you're not sorry later. The noise comes from the counter shaft inside the reverser. The older Isolators were made up of five springs attaching a central hub to the engines flywheel. They added to the already distinct rattle of a 350 with a reverser. The newer style isolator helped but did not cure the noise. They still clunk and rattle on start up and shut down. Your .002 is spot on and you should be good to go.

I would go ahead and check the water pump and anything else on the front of the engine while you have it out. Lots easier to work on those items now as apposed to after your reinstall the motor. Just a thought and good luck with your machine. :)

Leonard
Thanks Funny you should mention the water pump I did check it this morning when I started reconnecting everything the water pump had some wobble to it so I pulled off and yes it's a lot easier now versus pulling everything later to change the pump and risking damaging the radiator I will replace the rubber water hoses the connect the cooling water lines also

Any idea where the fuel tank vent on this machine is
The cap itself is not vented There is a small tube at the fill neck but it has no way to vent It has a lot of vacuum when removing the cap after running

In the filler neck, the open end of the small tube you see is the vent tube. it runs down through the inside of the tank and is open ended on the bottom where it exits out through the bottom skin of the tank. They often get plugged at the lower end by insects or dirt build up. You might be able to bow it out with compressed air. I use a 1/16" TIG filler wire to run down through the tube on my crawler. The TIG filler wire is stiffer than mechanic's wire, it goes a bit dry, but it will fit through. They didn't vent the cap itself so fuel wouldn't vent out the cap, and down the operator's back, when fuel was sloshing in the tank during operation.
