New project 450c
New project 450c
Hello
I have only been introduced to this forum recently after buying a 1978 450c dozer (#313940T). This forum is full of information and very grateful it exists. The dozer I acquired needs some TLC and not sure where to start. It is my first dozer and am new to this type of machine (under carriages). I do own a mid 70's jd 440b as well.
I will post some pictures to help give a better idea of where the condition of the machine stands. I feel it needs motor work, under carriage work, and possible some bearing work underneath the foot platform.
1. The motor (#492144T/4219Ct02) runs and seems like it has plenty of power, though I haven't worked it to hard yet. There is pressure coming out of the dip stick and seems to be coolant/water coming out too. There is a film of oil on top of coolant in radiator. Doesn't seem to use any coolant has the level doesn't change. There is little blowby coming out vent on top of valve cover to so I don't believe it is clogged. I need to replace the temp gauge as that doesn't work which is why I haven't worked it to hard yet, so I don't know if it gets hot while running. It does smoke while running. I did change the oil when i first received it. It didn't seem to have any moisture in it.
2. Sounds like there is a chatter or rattle underneath my feet, especially in reverse it howls pretty good. I've read it is a common noise? The noise seems to be really noticeable at idle when going forward and reverse, might be cause the motor isn't revved up. If I pull the motor which I might just to see what it looks like in the bellhousing, is there a bearing in there? I changed the steering clutches, final drives, and transmission fluid. How do I tell if the sump conversion has been done as I rechecked the steering clutch and it was overfull on both sides?
3. The undercarriage needs some work as both sprockets are about at points on the teeth, one front idler I can move if I push on it. They both are about 3" from the end of rail. The grouser pads have about an inch left on them. The pins could be rotated as one side seems fine yet. I need a new grease zerk on one adjuster as it wont keep grease in.
Other then above, it fires up after a few rotations, drives, and steers great. The brakes are good. I could just use a little expertise in which should be tackled first before I put it to work.
Thanks
Solo

RE. Posting Pictures....When you are signed in to the crawler site...click on the board Index....the last forum is Q&A forum, in that you will find "Pic Server" Instructions....as noted you must send email to...postmaster@jdcrawlers ... that is Lavoy owner of the site, giving him your chosen sign-in for the pic server along with your password for that site, once he has acknowledged you will be able to access the "pic server" and you can print out the instructions and follow them closely....i find it easier to use laptop or pc when doing so.......easiest method of getting pics is using cell phone and mailing them to your email and pic up on the laptop or pc to upload to the pic server....cannot really load directly from cell phones-- though can be if you are really literate in computers...

Re: New project 450c
Good looking machine! Sure sounds like you may have a head gasket issue. If that's the case and you don't feel like pulling it down right now or don't have time Ive heard great things on Blue Devil head gasket sealer. Have been told it works miracles. Just gotta make sure to follow instructions closely on back of bottle. Be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Re: New project 450c
Well I'm rebuilding the motor. It has coolant in the oil pretty bad. While it is out I will replace the throw out bearing. Should I go ahead and replace clutch and pressure plate? Hopefully it takes care of the howl in reverse. Anything else I should replace on engine While it's out? Thanks

Re: New project 450c
Clutch and pressure plate aren't gonna fix the howl in reverse, mine does it as well it's in the HLR.
I not quite sure I understood, did you replace the fluid in the trans and drives?
Get manuals... they will help. Sumps are common on a C version, manual will help explain.

Re: New project 450c
Yes I replaced all fluids and filters when I bought it. I have the manuals and I'll be using them for the rebuild. I'll look into the HLR while I have it all apart.
What should a guy do with the turbo during a rebuild? Buy a kit or new turbo?
Also, it is a little wet looking in the clutch housing. Where would be the first place to check?
