Injection pump removal question

Post by Gwilkrrs » Tue May 17, 2022 7:57 pm

Trying to remove the pump- the book says remove bolts holding pump on or something like that- how do you remove the bottom nut? I can’t seem to get a wrench or socket on it. I don’t have a “bent” (off set) wrench- is that what I need?
I have everything else ready but that lower nut is like impossible- I cut a 9/16 wrench to make a stubby or weld it back together offset?

I used a wobble/universal joint socket and some locking extensions. I would suggest you put one of the upper bolts on and snug then remove the lower. If the uppers are off the bump will pivot and you will get knocked off the lower.

You have it a TDC and the stub installed in the flywheel? for confirmation once you remove the pump look at the end of the shaft, I believe there is a dot on one tang. If you look inside the mount you should see another dot on the gear that the tang gets inserted into. Mine did.

In my early career and after a couple of very frustrating attempts at removing that bottom nut, I finally sacrificed a good 9/16" open end wrench and bent it to fit. Still not perfect but I still have it and I have lost count of how many pumps it has helped remove. I've tried just about every combination I could think of and this was the best fix for me. The next best was the wobble socket and extensions like DrLoch mentioned. I also had some results with an old open end wrench that was offset to 90 degrees. I still ended up back with my old sacrificed Bluepoint open end that I bent the crap out of. They are a pain dude and there is no perfect way to do it. But for me the bent wrench was the best, quickest way I found.

I put a pretty severe bend on the wrench as well. I stayed as close to the jaws of the wrench as possible and went past 90 degrees. You need to be able to come from underneath the nut so it takes a sharp bend to do that. I hope that makes sense and I wish you luck.
