455E with an issue...whining sound

Post by Floridabluebill » Sun Jul 03, 2022 6:32 am

I have a 455E crawler/loader that makes a high pitched whining sound thats coming from the hydraulic fluid pump reservoir area.

Ive taken the top cover off, looked inside reservoir, screen is clear on-the intake....

recent fluid/filter change however I have been connecting unit to a backhoe (chasing leaks in backhoe)

Hydraulics work

just this high pitched whining sound...unattached to backhoe.......dont sound good.

any ideas?

thnx, CJ.

Am I reading this correctly, that there is nasty whining noise in the pump while the backhoe is off the machine?

Are the hoe hoses unhooked from the hoe and NOT hooked back together?

Back hoe is off.

Whining sound is coming from hydraulic fluid reservoir side to my immediate right as I am seated in unit.

Its not coming from the pump (which is at the very front of the machine under the radiator).

Are the hoe hoses hooked back to each other? Or are the left unhooked?

The whining is your relief valve in your hydraulic valve. The hoses for your backhoe are either not connected or improperly connected. You will be asking where to get a pump if you run it like this. The backhoe is run via a power beyond circuit off the main valve.

Could also be your return to level function stuck on the main hydraulic valve. Make sure the bucket curl function is not stuck in the curl in position.

Unit is completely disconnected from backhoe and the two hoses are reattached.

Will check out the hose couplers today and the return level function as suggested.

Thanks for the replies. Ill keep you posted!

Still dealing with this whining sound coming from the loader control valve area of my 455E, (Unit is not attached to backhoe)

checked hydraulic filter (looked clear/ unclogged), drained reservoir and checked intake screen (clear), vibration is strong on loader control valve and line that runs to coupling at the rear of the unit) and slightly audible at the front of the unit at the actual hydraulic pump.

Iam thinking a restriction in the hydraulic control valve, yet my hydraulics (the bucket) work just fine.

    Any thoughts???????????? Plz help!

Check the quick connects for your backhoe. Best remove them and connect with full flow fittings to ensure the connectors are not the problem. This was one of the first lessons on running a Deere with a hoe as will blow up a hydraulic pump real quick.

The vibration is your relief valve hitting its max.

I have swapped out the quick connects with new ones, but they are still quick connects........

that being said.... straight flow connectors are an alternative? from JD or are they aftermarket?

also....one other observation.....my hydraulic fluid in the reservoir........gets really hot, making the reservoir (the outside metal) nearly too hot to touch.....

What I meant was direct connect the hoses with regular fittings, eliminating a possible quick coupler issue.

You need to find the problem and stop running your machine.

My next step would be to remove the power beyond fitting in your loader hydraulic valve and install a normal plug. This would eliminate any possible collapsed hose issues on the backhoe circuit.

From there has to be an obstruction in the pressure line from the pump to the valve, in the valve, or from the valve to the tank.

Others have blow pumps when the return to dig function fails and the bucket curl function sticks on.

I hear you and plan on breaking it down further. It has to be an obstruction centering around the return to dig valve.

I am not running it, those hydraulic pumps start at $1400!!!!
