So, I mounted the replacement starter on the top stud and threaded on the nut, easy peasey.
Then managed to drop the lower bolt into the blackness below, oh no.
At this point I decided to try the starter with just the top nut for now.
It must have been at slight angle because of no lower fastener and that caused it to lock up when it was energized.
Found the the bolt under the dozer and installed it and the starter fired right up :D
It is another old unit and has a limited life ahead so I took the two other starters to a rebuilder who will reman the better of the two.
Meantime, since the dozer was once again running, I hauled in the rest of the pine pulp I had bunched nearby and got the pulp load ready to truck for next week.

Tried to start it the AM and the old starter was unhappy, cranking very slowly and then beginning to smoke
Enough of that, I will just have to wait till the reman is ready, hopefully next week.
Stay tuned.

Any thoughts about a new gear reduction starter we discussed earlier? I have been down your path, also. I thought I should stick with OEM. After the starter was in and out and remanufactured and out again, I needed my crawler to be much more dependable. After the new starter went in, the crawler has been extremely dependable with starting. Not all situations are the same, but the new starter was the right choice for me.

I did consider a GR starter and may yet go that route if the reman proves unreliable but for now I will stick with OEM.

Got a call from the starter guy and went and got the reman.
Took it up to the dozer and after pulling the current old starter, installed the reman.
Also discovered my hand is small enough to fit through the access hole to place and thread in that pesky bottom bolt.
Hooked up the electrics, hit the starter button [which is also wonky or at least its wiring is, but that is for another day] and it fired up with 1 revolution and settled into an idle.
Hauled a log in and shut it down, went to restart and no crank, the start button acting up.
Put my jumper switch on the starter and will use that till i get around to fixing the rest of the electrics

Those bottom bolts/nuts are easy to remove with a crowfoot wrench.

I jam a towel or some rags under the starter in case i drop the nut so I don't need to fish for it.

I have not looked at the Messageboard for a long while, so my comment is late in arriving!

When I bought my 450C the wiring was a mess, the previous owner had install a starter button “jumper” with 10ga. wire and a momentary single throw switch. I pulled all that out and hooked up the old starter button wiring. I then found I had similar issues to yours, intermittent starting. Long story short, an old crimp style butt splicer 😠 repair going to the neutral safety switch was corroded and gave me a slow, grinding starter operation. FWIW

AS far as I can tell, the NSS has been disabled on this machine since I could just turn the key and hit the start button while standing next to the dozer.

Check the wire’s that went to the safety switch. They may have been connected together. Could have a bad connection there.

After you take the left floorboard out follow the HLR linkage to the side of the transmission. The NSS is located there.

Well less than two months later the reman appears to have died.
I get no sound or movement from the starter when i jump it connected directly to the battery.
90 day warranty so I will take it back to have them check it out.
