Coolant in all 3 cylinders

Post by Jason37756 » Sat Nov 19, 2022 4:58 pm

350 B with the 3-152 engine

I pulled the head today and found that all 3 cylinders have coolant in them. Both the head and water pump have been replaced by the previous owner.

Coolant in the oil isn’t a new thing…gasket, head, block and the problem is usually found. But with all 3 cylinders full I’m kinda stumped as to what is happening to cause the issue. The dip stick shows signs of coolant as well.

When I removed the head all head bolts were present and torqued properly, the head was super easy to separate from the block/gasket, and the gasket did not show any signs of problems. I did not see any cracks in the head or block.

So after thinking about this I am leaning toward a head that has been shaved that has created a situation where the head bolts are bottoming out before the gasket is fully compressed.

Any thoughts or advise are welcomed.

Thanks

Something else I just realized…i did not remove the lower radiator hose before removing the head. This probably created a situation where the head had coolant in it that could have drained into the cylinders.

I did remove some housing from the head that drained quite a bit of coolant, but I figure most of that was from the radiator.

She opened up a little bit last night when the temps dropped below freezing and it’s evident I have a cracked block…time to drop my spare engine in there…

Both sides of the middle cylinder at the thinnest location. Should have caught it right away, but was curious about the coolant being in the cylinders. The cracks did become more evident after the engine cooled and the air temp dropped.

Thing was probably ran very hot I would imagine.
