Can someone help me identify year 450

Post by pearljam724 » Wed Dec 28, 2022 3:48 pm

I believe Ijust purchased a 65 - 70 straight 450. Can someone help me identify the exact year. It’s serial number on the dash tag is only 3 numbers and they are 297 with a model number of 7450.

aint positive, but i think the 450s serial numbers are on seat base next to your right leg.
try search serial number ovation in this lte model forum...or someone with more positive location will soon advise...dont believe serial on dash

Edit...one post indicates that if possibly 450b...the tag should be on the battery box and that would place that one near midway in the series..for close date

also helpful to add your location to your profile

Wrong tag, that is the loader's serial number tag. 7450 is the model number of the loader on your crawler, not the crawler. A straight 450 crawler serial number tag will be on the panel under the seat, right behind your right calf when sitting in the seat. If it is not there look for two 1/8" holes about 3 inches apart horizontally. That is where the tag was. Mid-way through the 450B production the tag was moved to the front panel of the battery box, where you would see it getting on the left side. If it has the two holes there you don't have a 450, it would be a B series or later.

Here is the machine serial number tag breakdown using the 450 Introduction from the JD 450 Parts Catalog:

SN = serial number
T = Tractor
5 = JD450
E= Crawler - Loader
3 = Diesel
M= (Transmission) Hi-Lo-Reverse

Serial number: 011153 (This number falls in the 1965 build range using the serial number list on this site’s FAQ board)

T= (Build location) John Deere Dubuque Works

This serial number indicates it is a 1965 straight 450 crawler tractor equipped with loader having a diesel engine and H-L-R transmission.

I had assumed it was a 65 - 70. Thank you, Jim B. With exception of turbo on later models. Do you know for approximately how long the 450 engine remained exactly the same after 1965 ?

I don't know the number of years. The basic 4219 engine remained the same for years and was used in many wheel tractors and other equipment. Changes like injectors, injection pumps, turbos, and timing gained some power. Accessories like the power steering pump addition on the early 450s and Bs were added to fit the application the engine was used in. Are you looking for something specific?

No, I was just wondering when and if the time comes to buy engine parts if those parts apply to most 450’s. I’m finding it’s not very easy to track down parts for these older machines. I’m wondering for example if I were to ever need a head gasket. If a head gasket or water pump is the same on all 450’s ?

Welcome to the Boards.

That appears to be the serial number for just the loader attachment, not the crawler. A dealer might be able to get some info on the year of it, but I doubt asking would amount to much. I believe the E (after the SN) stands for Equipment as I see that on some JD attachments, like loaders, and other non-powered equipment. 7450 would be the loader model. The U at the end tells you it was built at the John Deere Industrial Works plant. The remaining digits would be the individual unit number, which might be traced to a build year.

The crawler serial number is more important and was what was being decoded in this thread. The serial number tag for a straight 450 crawler and the early 450Bs was located on the panel under the seat, about behind the operator's right calf when setting in the seat. If you see two 1/8" holes about 3" apart in that area, your crawler serial number tag is missing, and you likely will not find a way to tell its actual serial number.

Going forward I suggest you start a new thread rather than tag on to an old one. In some cases, people read the first post or two and make replies to those and miss a later post like yours, so things get mixed up. That certainly is not as bad here as it is on some forums, but it helps keep things clearer.

Only way to know interchangeability is to use part numbers. I would never guess how long a given part was used throughout the series.
