1965 JD 350 Crawler

Post by Dbyrom » Mon Jan 30, 2023 10:07 am

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and excited that I found it. I have owned my 1965 350 gas engine crawler for 6 plus years and never used it. I've had lots of people come by and ask if I was selling it. I have decided to get it running and start playing. First problem I've come to is someone pulled off the spark plugs wire from sparks plug and dist. Does anyone know the firing order on this unit including that dist wire placement and cylinder.

Thanks
David

The parts book, PC291, has a picture on page 70-23 that may help you. Go to the online JD parts book.

Welcome to the Boards.

The firing order is 1-2-3 around the outer posts of the distributor cap, with the coil wire in the center post. # 1 cylinder is the one closest to the radiator.

Over the years distributors get removed and reinstalled, not always in the location shown in pictures, so you need to confirm which distributor cap terminal post is for # 1 plug wire. Remove all three spark plugs so the engine turns over easily. Make sure the transmission is in neutral. Hold a finger tightly over the # 1 sparkplug hole. Bump the starter until you feel your finger being pushed away by compression. That should put # 1 close to TDC on compression. Remove the distributor cap and see which terminal in the distributor cap the rotor is pointing at. That is the terminal that the #1 plug wire should go in. I think the rotation is counterclockwise so # 2 wire is the first wire CCW from # 1 wire, then # 3 CCW from # 2.

Here is a link you can click to go to the John Deere online parts catalog (PC921) for the straight 350 crawler tractor. It is free to use

You should consider contacting Lavoy (by phone or email [postmaster@jdcrawlers.com]) and see if he has, or can get, the service and operator's manuals for you through his store.

You might consider adding your general location to your profile. Sometimes it helps to have an idea of where folks are located.

I do have one more question. This JD 350 has points and I was wondering can that be change to a electronic ignition? if so what brand/part number should I use?..

Thanks
David

Yes, it can be changed to electronic ignition. You may want the brand and numbers of the distributor when you are checking. I suggest calling or emailing Lavoy as a starting point to see if he has in his store or can supply the parts you need.
