JD 450 shifting gears question

Post by pearljam724 » Sun Apr 02, 2023 5:05 pm

Is it ok for the health of the transmission to shift from low to high gear or high to low on the move on a John Deere 450 ? Or should you come to a complete stop first ?

Perfectly safe, assuming all is adjusted well.

The reverser is hydraulic clutches, running in oil. You can shift from low to high, high to low, low to reverse, high to reverse and reverse to high or low as you choose, on the go, no clutch, no stopping. You can start from a stop by shifting the HLR selector to any of those positions, no clutch. You can stop by shifting the HLR into neutral, no clutch. You need to use the clutch to change gears in the 4-speed range transmission, which is a gear transmission. Those gear changes will likely bring you to a stop since you are using the engine clutch to stop the gears from turning to make a gear change. Your operator's manual should explain shifting methods.
