How to determine model year with no number plate

The number plate is gone from my 450C, is there any way to determine year of mfg?

If the engine serial number tag is still on it a dealer might be able to get an approximate date on the engine. If they can, you still need to remember the engine might have been replaced over the years.

To go a step beyond finding the year; how can you be sure it is a C without the tag? Some late Bs had wet steering clutches and brakes. And the change to the serial tag being riveted on the front panel of the battery box happened during the B series production run.

Where is the engine tag located?

If the engine tag is still in place, it will be on the right side of the engine in the area between the end of the starter and fuel transfer pump.

Some crawlers had the SN stamped in the battery box. Like underneath the SN tag bxt the two rivets. Can you see where the two rivet were that held the tag to the battery box? Are there multiple layers of paint that could be hiding this stamping?

Well duh, there is a tag s/n: 450CC 268050 looks like it is a 1977. Would that year have a common sump?
