Help 1970 JD 350 B Loader

Post by pearljam724 » Mon Aug 14, 2023 4:25 pm

Hey guys, I just bought a 1970 JD 350 B loader. I’m looking to tighten the track on the right side of the machine. I also have a 69 JD 450 loader. On the 450 there are grease fittings on both sides of machine to tension tracks. I’ve done it many times. On this 350 B there’s only a grease fitting on the left side. I need to tighten tracks on the right side. There is only a approximately 1 inch square head bolt. Near the front idler and no grease fitting appears to be broken off, etc. What is the deal here ?

If I were to venture a guess I would say the adjuster on the right side has been replaced with an aftermarket ram assembly. Those come with the grease fitting in the end of what appears as a large bolt at the front of adjusting cylinder. That bolt is actually a release mechanism as well as the mechanism for adjusting the track tension. Check the end to see if the grease fitting has been sheered off and if so see if you can remove what is left of it and install a new fitting.

Along with the type LeonardL mention l have seen some with a pipe coupling welded to the idler end with a square head pipe plug in the coupling. The grease fitting is under the plug, protected from damage.

(edited: coupling, not cooling)

Nothing is sheered off. The cylinder doesn’t look like the one on the left side. The only thing it has is what appears to be a 1 inch cap/bolt with a square head. It looks exactly like a national pipe thread end cap. With a square head to put a crescent wrench on. Should Zi remove that cap to see what’s under it ? I looked all over there is no broken grease fitting on this thing.

Is there a grease fitting under the square head bolt?

Yes, remove the pipe plug, the grease fitting is likely under it. That sounds like the type I posted about.
