Missing upper idler

Post by Straight350 » Tue Sep 12, 2023 4:32 pm

I have a what I was told a 1968-ish straight 350 w/gas engine and a 6 way blade. My first dozer ever and really like it for around the property. It’s missing the upper roller/idler on both sides. I didn’t notice it when buying it, so I just want to make it right. Does someone have a link to this part? I have already put a new choke cable, checked all fluids, gave everything a couple pumps of grease and pushed around a lot of dirt on the motocross track. I also put a new radiator cap (8lb) from tractor supply, but it spits out the overflow tube a little here and there even though the temp gauge seems to be working fine and running around 190. Once I figure out how to post pictures I will be doing that. Thanks in advance

Wow dude!! I mean wow!! No carrier rollers on either side?!? How do you push anything without the tracks coming off?!?!? Go to ( partscatalog.deere.com ) and look up your machine. They will have the part numbers for what you need. I would call a couple of salvage companies first and see if they would have a couple of select used ones. The 350s are all the same and use the same carrier roller and bracket.

As for your coolant spitting out of the radiator? It depends on how much is leaving. The gas burners were a bit notorious for getting rid of some coolant if you over filled them. But you really shouldn't have any coolant blowing out of the radiator. I would be suspect of a head gasket if it is blowing a lot of liquid.

I actually read on this forum last night that the 4 roller setups did NOT come with the upper roller. Only the 5 roller models came with the upper roller. Can anyone confirm if that correct?

I've been around a lot of 350s and have never seen one that didn't have a carrier roller on each side.

Well... I just went to the JDparts site and looked at the parts listing for a Straight 350, four roller track assembly and they do not show an upper roller or carrier. From that I would assume that the four roller tracks do not need one. Who knew!! Right?!? I guess I have never been around or seen a four roller 350 before. All of the machines I've worked on have been five roller track systems. So I have yet again learned something about a 350 that I didn't know!!
