650G 1991?

Post by jmcarrol » Mon Sep 25, 2023 7:10 am

New the the forum so I want to say hello from NW Arkansas. Yesterday, I purchased a 650G for a farm dozer. It was down the this one and a D5C. The 650G was in a lot better shape as it had been a pipe laying dozer with a great undercarriage and no welds or anything patched together like most that old. We just wanted a tough old dozer that we could do most of the work ourselves instead.
I am ordering manuals and wanted to find out more info on this machine before ordering everything to service it. Seller says it was a 1991, but the serial number info I found indicates 1992. What "series" is a 1991 or a 1992 650G? Serial# TO650GH 778686. Any info would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Boards.

650 is the model G is the series.

In your serial number the TO means it was built at the Dubuque Works. 650 is the model, G is the series. The parts catalog doesn't show what H designates, you may need to ask your JD construction equipment dealer about that letter. That position should be F, L, or W (designating the type of undercarriage) according the the introduction section of the parts catalog. 778686 is the serial number for your 650G. It is in the 1992 serial number range.

I read there were 4 different series of 650Gs and the transmissions were upgraded sometime, but I don’t know the year/series of the upgrades.

Serial number breaks (not build years) in the parts catalogs are usually where upgrades show up as changes are made to parts used during production runs. Sometimes a Technical manual may reference the serial number break, if the procedure changes because of the related part change. The 650G parts catalog (there is only the one 650G catalog on the jdparts website) shows several serial number breaks related to transmission (and some other parts) used during production. And some parts are shown as not being the same for torque convertor machines and direct drive machines. I don't find any info regarding other series within the G series, only serial number breaks for changes during the production run and the torque convertor and direct drive machines. Using the serial number breaks, torque convertor, and direct drive part changes I suppose one might say there were 4 variations of the 650G.

The 450G, 455G, 550G, 555G, and 650G are grouped together in some of the manuals. They are separate models of varying size, having a G series, using common parts, operating, and repair info.

it would be interesting to read what you are referencing. Can you provide a reference/link to it? There may be such, and someone will pitch in more info here, however I cannot find any reference to such.
