Post by NIKinNZ » Tue Nov 28, 2023 2:25 am

Hello All, i have a JD450C (1975 i believe) the serial number is 450 CJ 271126T

Im in New Zealand and my starter seems to need overhauled, (cranking VERY slow and wont start it) and the solenoid gete VERY hot. I would like to purchase an aftermarket spare starter while i overhaul the original one, im must not sure which one i need? i have a manual but not the 'Parts Manual' so cant seem to locate the original part number, i did see this aftermarket one but not sure if it will fit the 1975? any help, suggestions, OE numbers would greatly help. Thanks

Good morning,

I was unable to find the OEM numbers. But I have listed the exact link to the one I have in my 450c. Works great, sounds like a Toyota when cranking, but I’m okay with that.

Hope this helps, Best regards, Bruce

Bruce has given you a good option.

For future reference. In the US we can access the JD parts books online. I don't know if the site we use is available in NZ, you will have to try going to it. Here is a link to the site, please let us know if it works for you:

https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/

And here is a direct link to the 450C crawler bulldozer parts catalog. I think you posted about your machine and the serial number indicated it was a bare tractor, no bulldozer or loader attachment. I do not find a catalog for a bare tractor, so you just disregard the bulldozer attachment info, the crawler tractor parts should be correct. There may be some serial number breaks that apply to some areas, so read carefully as you search for parts.

450C Parts Catalog PC1420

If the links don't take you there, check with your local JD dealer, I would expect there is a way to get to them.

It looks like the original starter Delco Remy part number was 1109251 and a couple of the JD replacement numbers are JD # RE62916 and SE501400.

Just a housekeeping note. It is best if you make posts about your 450C on the Late Models Board. The Early Models Board covers the machines up to and including the 1010 and 2010 models. 350s, 450s and after are grouped on the Late Models Board. A Moderator may move this thread over to the Late Models Board.

Thanks Bruce and Jim, starter ordered. Thanks again very much appreciated. I think i may have a wiring issue with the starter so i am going to look at re-doing that as well so i will see if i can locate a wiring diagram from that link.

The links I gave you go to the parts catalogs. John Deere puts the wiring diagrams in the Technical (service) manuals, which are a purchase item. eBay can be a good place to find a used John Deere 450C Technical Manual (publication number TM1102). If you have a friendly JD dealer, they might give you a copy of the wiring diagram and key information that goes with it. They can likely order the TM in for you if you want.

If you have a starter rebuilder nearby that is a cheaper alternative. I got mine done for about $200 vs 650 for new which was NA anyway.

Simple stuff first. Have you cleaned up all the wiring from the batteries to the starter? I suspect you have tried this already. You probably want to do that before installing a new starter anyway.

Even before going through the electrical connections and cable wire inspections, you could use a volt meter to see what the voltage drop is at the starter when under load. If most off the voltage isn't sitting at the starter when cranking, it's time to look for a hot spot somewhere back towards the battery. It's a quick way to isolate where the issue is.

Back on Nov. 29, 2023 he posted he had a starter ordered.

This past Saturday he started a new post, "450 C Not Starting but runs on ether when sprayed", so I think the starter issue is passed. I gave him some things to check but haven't heard back on results.
