What is equivalent to a T12592 shim.

Post by Cle Elum John » Mon Mar 18, 2024 11:33 pm

Installation of the power steering mounting brackets on a 450() calls for shimming the mounting bracket on installation. The book procedure would install at least one shim at each of the 4 locations. That will get the mounting bracket to stand off the top of the transmission. If I read the Deere parts catalog correctly they are T12592 shims, it is not completely clear. The part description calls them either shims or spacer rings. A web search shows them selling for between $5 and $10 each plus an excessive shipping charge . Does anyone know how thick theses guys are? Wouldn't a stack of washers work as well?

They appear to be for alignment of the moving parts so I would think stacks of washers would work, might take a bit of fiddling to get it where you want it.

The method says that the aft two bolt locations get one spacer/shim each. The manual says for the front two bolt locations ".......as many as will fit". If the thickness of the shim is know, it sets the stand off distance at the aft bolt. You can futz around to set the front shim thickness like the manual says.

Does anyone know, or can even suggest a way of finding, the shim thickness. I thought Deere actually had a list of suggested alternate parts. When the thing taken apart there weren't shims at any location so there is not even a starting point.

I may just bring a bag of 1/2in ID washers and try for best fit.

Thanks for the help
John

A few years ago, JD online parts catalogs had info on some parts like hardware, shims, some seals and O-rings. They did an upgrade, and that type of info was taken away from the general public catalogs. I think a dealer might have access to some info as the parts guys at the dealer I use have been able to sub somethings when the hardware called for was not available. Looking at the parts drawing and guessing, T12952 looks like it might be 1/2" tall, 7/8 to 1" OD with a 1/2" clear hole in the center, based on a 1/2-13 x 1-1/2 capscrew being used.

I remember getting generic specs for o-rings from the catalog. I guess they removed the generic cross reference it so they can sell JD brand washers for $5 or $10 each plus $5 for shipping.

You said that you were looking at a drawing that showed the T12952 and it looked like it's about 1/2 in thick. Was that the blurry thing in the exploded parts diagram for the JD450 or did you find something better.

I am going to take a look at it this afternoon and see if I can get everything aligned right. I will go in thinking it might be a pretty thick stack.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I was just looking at the drawing in the online parts catalog and guessing size relationship.

I bet at least part of the reason was JD figured out they were giving away money having the specs online so people could substitute things.
