350 straight reverser filter and oil change.

Post by Kolot » Thu Aug 14, 2025 7:55 am

I want to dump the oil and change the filter on the 350 reverser, its been sitting quite a while before I aquired the machine last spring. The machine was run without the belly pan and the drain plug took a beating. Can I drain it by removing or loosening the filter cover plate? I also can extract oil from the dipstick filler if needed.
Anyone use the Travelers universal tractor oil in the reverser. Says it meets 303, j20 and Hy Guard spec. I know a lot of guys say Hi Guard only but machine is almost 60 yrs old and Hy guard didnt even exist when this machine came out.

Yes you can drain the oil via the filter cover. I take three of the four bolts out and then just loosen the fourth bolt. Pry the cap loose and it will drain most of your oil out. Bear in mind that the filter is connected to the cap and is also spring loaded. The spring tension is minimal however so it's not going to throw it at you. But it will push outward as you remove the cap.

Not all of your oil will drain this way and you will need to get the remaining oil removed in whatever way you can. It's not much, maybe a couple of pints or so.

As for your brand of oil? As long as your fluid meets or exceeds the Deere specs then you will be okay. Newer machines then maybe it should only be Deere oil but I have used several different brands without issue. But I always made sure they meet the specs before I used them. None of them are cheap these days. I do watch Deere as they will throw their HI-GARD on sale once in a while.

If you haven't already... it would be a good Idea to put a skid pan underneath your machine. It might just save you ruining a reverser case or the transmission. It also protects the engine as well.

Leonard, I used an extractor to get the bulk of the oil out then took off the cover and removed the filter and changed that. Not bad so someone must have done it at some point. I got lazy and was going to put it back together but I realized now is the time with the skid plate off. So, I welded a net to the plug and it extracted real easy once I got it moving , then I just put a standard 3/8 pipe plug in there with blue thread locker.
As far as the skid plate I have it it came with the machine but I am going to have to work it with a press to straighten it out some. The machine was last used to push silage, mostly corn stalks into big piles, I guess a lot of them were collecting in the belly and they removed the skid to remedy that.
I ended up using the TS Travelers Universal Tractor oil and it's labeled with all the Deere specs, wether its true or not. Figure it's got to be better than what was in it. Tranny oil next, it looks milky. Hope I don't have a cooler mixing issue or is that only on the reverser? Reverser oil was not bad.

I have used the Travelers premium UTHF in JD equipment for years with no issues and know of others who use it as well, without issue.

Be careful of a standard pipe plug sticking out exposed from the bottom of your transmission.

I'm with Jim on the pipe plug. Those should really be a flush fitting plug with either an "Allen" socket or a "Square" socket. Now that being said even the flush mount plugs will protrude a bit.

Those plugs get damaged when the skid plate gets mashed up against the reverser. This exposes those drain plugs to all sorts of debris but it's mostly rocks that damage them.

Your transmission oil is most likely getting water from the surface or from condensation. The cooler is for the reverser only on a straight 350 or 350B. Cs and Ds can get coolant contamination through the cooler lines via the reverser because they use the reverser to pressurize the steering clutches. So if your reverser oil was free of water then your transmission will be getting contaminated from rain or condensation.

Almost good to hear on trans oil, having a good time trying to flush it with diesel, that goo film stays right on the bottom and doesnt break up easy
Guess I will have to get it hot and drain and fill till it cleans out. Was thinking about putting a small heater under it to maybe evaporate the moisture while the case is empty.
I will hunt down some flush plugs.
