450c leaking

Post by 76450c » Mon Feb 23, 2026 4:03 pm

Have a 76 450c I just redid, it’s leaking where the brake goes into the steering housing. I can’t find the seal anywhere on jd parts or service manual. Any ideas?

Check out item key #15 in the parts catalog page linked below to see if this is the seal you are looking for.

I saw number 15. So hard to tell but I’m guessing that’s the only seal on that side! Thank you appreciate it

You may want to consider replacing the bushing behind it. A worn bushing will shorten seal life.

So I took the battery box out, opened up steering clutch cover. I see the brake pin shaft that goes out steering clutch where it’s leaking, i barely see the tiny seal from the outside I just don’t know how to get the pin out to charge the seal, also don’t see the bushing. Looks like only way for pin to come out is pull whole steering clutch. Manual shows nothing about it

I am guessing you have the TM1102 John Deere Technical Manual, I do not have a copy of that so I can direct you to an actual page. The bushing is in the bore of the housing, and I am not surprised you can't see it. From looking at my 450E manual and the TM1102 index I think you should find the info in Section 40 Power Train, Group 15 Steering Clutch and Brake Assembly, in your TM1102 I expect the info may be considered lacking and they do show removing the brake band and steering clutch for access before removing the shaft to replace the bushings and seal. For practical purposes I would say only the bushing on the seal side can be replaced without removing the housing as there is an expansion plug sealing the hole outside of the second bushing.

Hopefully LeonardL, or some of the others who have been there and done that will be along with more info.

So I looked at manual and it says nothing about that, does the expansion plug on the outside come off?

Ok I figured it out, pulled steering cover off, went to the freeze plug on the outside of steering clutch box towards the front. Welded a 3/4 inch nut, put a ratchet on it, got plug out. After that the rod slid out after taking pin out of the arm inside, pulled the rod from the outside out. There you can change both inside and outside bushing and the seal on the inside of steering box!
