Starter Wiring

I'm working on removing the reverser mount on my 1967 350 straight with the diesel engine and I had to remove the starter to give me more room. The starter was working fine when I removed it; it's a JD remanufactured unit.

The starter relay is wired as it should be, with one exception. There was one wire ring connector that was taped to the large lug with electrical tape. It's a small wire with a very small ring connector, just like the wire that goes to the S terminal.

My guess is that this wire was supposed to go to the I terminal on the relay to send power to the coil when starting a gas engine. If so, I should just be able to delete it.

It may well be that. If so there should be a wire end either where the coil should be or at the ignition switch if the wiring diagram shows a resistor on the switch or a resistor wire going to the coil.

I just reinstalled the starter and left the mystery wire unhooked and it started fine, so I covered the terminal with some heat shrink.

Just in case you want to know for sure... You are correct in thinking that wire was for the gas engines. If you were to look behind the dash panel there would also be a resistor missing and the other end of that wire you found. Later machines didn't have the wire in the loom .
