Crawler wood splitter

Post by JR » Mon May 07, 2007 3:47 pm

Number one son has wheels so I decided to get him to earn some extra money. As we have lots of firewood around I suggested he sell some and he could make some quick bucks. As I don't have a splitter and a maul is slow and tiresome I decided to make one for the dozer.
I bought a 3/4" i-beam making sure when laid on its side the dozer tracks would fit in between the webs. On one end I welded a 6" tab so it would sink in the ground when driven on and hold the beam from sliding.
on the other end on top I welded a wedge to split the wood and that is the whole thing. Just drive on the beam and the power angle blade will push the wood on to the wedge and split just as fast as you can go! As the beam is ground level you don't have to lift heavy pieces up high either.

Loader also

You probably could also use the bucket on a loader to push the wood as the blade does so this not only for a power dozer blade.

Crawler wood splitter

Post by JR » Tue May 08, 2007 3:35 pm

I certainly will post some pictures soon as I am on the road a lot a need to find my camera etc. It is really simply if you can picture my explanation and has no moving parts of its own. It's cheap also and will split rock maple like butter.

That is a good idea ,I always say that good ideas start at ground level. Is that a D3 xl or D4 xl you are using.I have had several of them they are good little units .I am going too build a splitter unit like that thanks for the idea .Digitup.

Its a D3B but I have a 350 also just happen to be near the D3.
You know the simplest things are usually the best but harder to think of. I grew up depending on myself to make my own solutions and it makes you feel good not having to depend on too many others. Sharing things like this also is good not trying to make money rather than friends.
Lets see how many everyone makes?
