455a trans machine quits moving after 10 minutes

Post by bpshaffer » Wed Sep 26, 2007 6:13 am

hello. i'm stumped i have a 1982 455a crawler loader that i bought with the asumption that everything was good but after using it for about 10 minuutes it quits moving just like you put it in nuetral, i changed the oil twice but still didn't help. i also keep getting water or so it seems in the oil. i silicone around the tops of the cover plates on the trans but still don't help. if anyone have any answers or suggestion to why it quits moving or where the water could be coming from i would be very greatful.

i tested the trans pressure and when i first start it up the pressure is 170 but after about ten minutes it slowly goes down and eventulally it goes all the way to zero. also when i put in gear, when the pressure is good [at 170] it will drop off to 30psi is this right ? i would be graetful for any help on this. thanks in advance.

It could be two things #1 the clutch unit piston seal is bad or #2 the pump is gone .But with that much early pressure then it is #1your clutch pack needs seals. You are going to have to go inside .Good Luck .Digitup.

The direction reverser unit pull out the top of the transmission .When the top plate is removed and the reverser is out this is as deep as you need to go. For a first timer that is a great distance in I can imagine .Now remember where and how it came apart every part !. Good Luck .Digitup.

I can't speak directly to this issue, but have done some teardown and buildup of automobile engines/drivetrains. I would highly recommend taking video as you take it apart or at the very least many digital photos so you can go back and look during parts replacement and the rebuild. Digital is better because you can zoom in as needed. Memories get fuzzy, even in a short period of time.

Also it helps to put labels on small bolts, nuts, and washers with the location and assembly order if you have a lot of those to deal with or get a small parts organizer so you can keep them seperate and label each drawer. Saves a lot of time on the rebuild.
