550A
I have a 550A,bearings went out in final drive, replaced all parts, except for pinion shaft, no one has one,24" tracks. 27T 10T 12 15/16 long any help? thanks Also when in use after machine use for about 1 hr or so stops pulling, aly help?thanks
Check your trany temp or pressure gage if it fluctuates or pressure goes away then it could be seals or pump in trany .The 550s and 555s were bad for taking the bull gear bearing out usually brought on by torquing into something and turning then letting the leaver slam back the quick snap back into gear just gernades the bearing after a while .That is no doubt the first part that Deere sold out of .keep looking the 550s 555s- 550As &555As had the same gears .I think they changed for 550Bs and 555Bs to a different bull and pinion ratio [ Just watch that ] How are the teeth on the small pinion gear they usually stress all to hell when the bearings go or the teeth on the bull gear go .Both shafts will need new bearings just to make your day a bit more miserable as well.Good luck [ been there several times but they are still the best damnd dozer ever built in my mind .Digitup

550 series
I have to agree Digitup, seen alot of 550 series with tons of hours on them and they have never been apart, trouble is if you happen to be the guy that finally does have to tear into one,you are in for a wallet draining experience.

I think the problem was that John Deere had out powered that drive system .The early 550s had the same drives and bull gears as a 450E I Think don't take my word for this but It is as close as s#$t to swearing to the ratio and gear width in both any way.I never had problems with finding parts my gears weren't bad I got the bearing in time but she was still a mess .What side is it that is the problem.I have a guy up here about twenty miles away that has a 555A with the left bearings out of it .I can grab it for about $2500 but then I would have a parts machine to deal with . That would drive the old girl to distruction if I started a wrecking yard !! I got a couple of wreckers up here I deal with for parts for the 21B Allis parts and he has several 555sin the yard .Get me the part #s and I will get back to you in a day or two .Digitup,

550A
I put all new stoof in the final drive except for a new pinion shaft #T81196 so I have been told by local JD dealer, one dealer sent me a pinion for a narrow track when in detail I told them it was a wide track, another sent me the brake shaft. This #supose to be right my shaft is 12 15/16 L 10t 27t.As for not pulling when it gets hot I will try what you suggest if I get it back together, thr guy I bought the 550 from just put a tork convetor in.thanks guys.
