Special Grease Gun

Post by Bud.L » Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:31 am

I have a 350C Dozer and the operators manual instructions are to grease the front idlers, track rollers and carrier rollers using special grease gun provided with crawler. I do not have this special grease gun. What is special about this grease gun? Can I use a regular grease gun?

Could this be referring to the button head zerks and the button head coupler on the grease gun? If so, these are available from various sources.
You can buy the button head coupler to attach to a regular grease gun . I got mine at W W Grainger but I am sure there are many outlets that sell them.

It's a low pressure grease gun that was supplied with the Deere crawlers. There are a number of posts on this topic around the site but Lavoy has previously posted that the best way to go is use a pistol grip type gun and feeling for the slightest resistance when filling the rollers.

I'm still looking for an original crawler grease gun but haven't seen one on eBay or anyplace else. The pistol grip gun should work but be careful not to blow out your roller seals.

Bud a standard grease gun will work just fine .A pistol grip gun works great a leaver action works well also but remember not to put all your weight on it as you could push out seals yes but you will have to apply considerable pressure to do that .A common sense approach is needed for this job. In all my years I have only found one low pressure gun they are hard to find I would recomend to put a guage on a pistol grip and it is real easy to put 2000lbs pressure on a pistol grip and 3500lbs is nothing for a leaver action grease gun I got one leaver action that will do over 6500lbs with ease but no flex hose or even a 3/8 steel pipe will take it .You can easily put big pressure on a grease gun but if you take your time and the trick is to grease more often with less than there should be no problems with seals moving I also have an old portable hydraulic leaver action press pump that I can shove hydraulic oil into a roller with if it has not seen a lot of action lately the hydraulic oil opens and lubs the seal when your seal sticks is when you will have problems .Digitup.
