450C transmission filter
450C transmission filter
Just got my service manual on the 450C I got a couple weeks ago and found out there is a transmission filter on it [along with a lot of other things]. Anyway, the filter is apparently under a 3 bolt cover on the right side of the machine at the bottom of the tranny case . It has some sort of wire coming out of it which I am assuming is the transmission temperature gauge connection -the manual didn't cover that or I haven't come up on it yet.
Now, for the question, -if I remove that cover over the filter am I going to have a deluge of tranny fluid coming out ? Do I need to drain the transmission before I try to change out the filter? On other equipment , the filter changes don't generally require draining the entire unit, but it makes more sense to ask you people who know these JD's before just popping the cover..

From owning 3 350-450's,I have never seen any real need to do this procedure as my screens never had any debris in them.Doesn't mean it can't happen but the tranny on these tractors really don't allow/generate much debris. The reverser now is another story. That will get contamination in it from normal use so definitely change that filter every 500 hours as your manual says.
Let's see if I understand what you all have told me. The 450C has a transmission filter up front by the radiator. Changed that. Also has a screen type filter at the bottom of the transmission casing. [Have the parts, haven't changed it yet.] It also has a 'reverser filter'? I haven't found that yet. Is a reverser filter and the transmission filter up by the radiator the same thing?

Quisman, after draining the tranny and pulling the filter, did you find any blockage or anything worth going to all the trouble for? I haven't pulled the plug on my tranny yet because I need something to run her up on give me a little more room to wriggle my old body under it. I'm looking for an excuse not to do it, but probably won't feel right about it until I make the last effort. Then I get to try my hand at adjusting steering clutches and brakes . That ought to be fun. Might just call in the pros for that one...
Hey man,
I'm not sure of the tools or resources you have but here was a very simple way that I got my dozer in the air.
I had a few rough cut 2x12's lying around. i put three of them under the tracks followed by 4 or 5 more and back up onto them so your about 1 foot onto them.....giving you a good 2 feet total in the air from track to ground. After that use the bucket/blade to even yourself out or get a little higher and block under the front of the tracks.
Then I set my brake and leave the blade down.....now I can drain the rear and enter to do work from the front. No matter how you do it, you have to be a contortionist to get under there I can't even explain what I found in my filter...it was damn near upsetting.
Hope this is somewhat helpful and answers some questions.
I found a crack in my tranny case, which i'm guessing is where the water came from. Needless to say she has a new life now and will be stored inside....meanwhile I have to find a way to fix the cast.

Oh , that was a nasty filter. Now I've just got to do mine to see what I have in there. I drained some of the tranny fluid from the top by siphoning it and got the milky mess so I probably have other crud in there, too.
Interesting approach to getting the unit up high enough to get under it . Whatever I end up doing it will be sturdy fer shure. Momma says she's not coming out to pick that thing off me....

HA HA HA, yeah...you don't want that beauty on top of you. That's what I said to the ol lady, don't worry babe if it falls on me i'm done. There won't be too much suffering involved. My clostrofobia kept me nervous for a while until I realized it was blocked up in 4 different places and the blade was down. More surface area and strength than any car i've been under jacked up.
I'm dying to open the filter housing back up to see what else is to be collected. I've pretty much come to terms with the fact I can't use my new toy until I get a new tranny housing or find a way to weld/repair the existing one These things sure are tough to work on after you spend every penny u have just to own it. Good luck and let us know what's in your lint catcher
