year model

Is there anyway of telling what year a 350 is without the serial tag, I was told he throught it was 1972, I have a 73 also, I notice on the 73 that where the bat. and valve chest is its about 9inches wide, and the other is about 12 inches, I was wondering if that may have been changed in different years or would that have to do with one having and manual 6 way blade and the other hyd. or would there be something else that was changed on the different years of the B that you could tell the differents in the year models.
